Pregnant after 35

Progesterone

Has anyone had a pregnancy supplemented with progesterone? If so, when did you stop using it? My doc is saying I can stop anytime but I'm really nervous. I'm 10 1/2 weeks and I'm using the suppositories once a day. My doc says there is really no evidence one way or the other whether it helps, and most people stop after the first tri...I am just scared that if it is helping and I stop things might suddenly go wrong. If anyone else has experience with this please share!

Re: Progesterone

  • My RE said that we will start tapering progesterone (and for me, estrogen) supplementation, with goal of being off of everything except prenatals by 9-10 weeks.  My RE said that once placenta is up and operational-placenta will make the hormones that baby needs.

  • My doctor is monitoring my progesterone levels. I am still on progesterone at 12 weeks and will stay on them until my doctor is happy with my levels. This is very conservative. Even among the doctors in my practice, there are many different ways to manage progesterone.

I was on 500mg orally until my 12 week appt, but my Dr. said I could have stopped at 10 weeks.

  • I was on progesterone suppositories. Originally, my doc wanted me on them until about 12 weeks, but I was tapered off by about 10.5/11 weeks because everything was looking good (placenta looked good on U/S, strong HB, etc.) and I didn't want to spend another $125 if I didn't need to-- plus, the suppositories were making me feel nasty (it felt like I had about 3 inches of old suppositories up there *shudder*).

Your body will take over and do its thing. But if it helps ease your mind to stay on the supps until 12 weeks, then do it. It won't hurt.

  • I was on them until 14 weeks.  I wasn't told to taper off but that I could stop taking them now since the placenta has taken over.

  • I understand how you feel. I was put on progesterone when they found out around 5 weeks that my progesterone went from a 9 to a 7.5 and they were concerned I might miscarry. I inserted vaginally at night and was told to stop at 10 weeks but I may have taken it for an extra week because I was also scared to stop. I am 31 weeks pregnant now and baby girl looks great. I wish you the best! FYI....I am 37 and this is my first pregnancy.

Thanks, you guys!  So I guess most people just stop cold turkey.  I was worried that my body might react to that but it sounds like I shouldn't be concerned.  I'm thinking I will stick it out for a few more days until I hit 11 weeks and then go ahead and stop.  My level was never low, they just put me on it because of my age, so hopefully I'm far enough along that the placenta is doing it's thing.  Fingers crossed!

  • Hi! I am taking progesterone pills. My RE stated I will take them until 12 weeks. At that time I can quit taking them and will be released to an OB.

  • We were on progesterone injections for both of my pregnancies until I was 12 weeks and then my OB had me stop at the 12 week mark.  My numbers were always a little low in progesterone.  My placenta took over the production of progesterone and it was able to produce enough to sustain my pregnancies.  I am now 32 weeks and doing well.  The progesterone suppositories did not bring up my numbers quick enough so we went the injection route and I did really well on the injections.   My doctor went by my ultrasounds and both my girls kept growing and developing and every appointment we heard a strong heartbeat so we knew the placenta was producing enough progesterone at that point.  With this pregnancy I started spotting at 12 weeks and I thought it was low progesterone but it turned it out be a small subchroinic hematoma that healed by itself by the time I was 20 weeks.  I only needed it for 12 weeks but some ladies are on it throughout their entire pregnancies and some are on it only the first 12 weeks.
