18 month old cries for food

My 18 month old cries and screams while I'm preparing his food.  He understands most everything I say to him, but he can't seem to grasp yet that I'm cooking the food for him and it takes some time.  Does anybody have tips to help him not get so upset?  We've tried distracting him, but once he knows we are making food, it's all he can think about.

  • Have you tried giving LO a snack to munch on while you cook? Sounds like if LO can't be distracted that it's because they're hungry, not bored.

  • Could you include him in the prep work?  Let him rinse off veggies in the sink, or mix things in the bowl?

This is what I do.  Something to keep her occupied, and not fill her up.  A couple small crackers usually does the trick.

I also try to guess when she's going to want to eat, and get started making lunch before she asks for food.  Otherwise, she's too hungry to be patient, and then we have a lot of screaming.

  • DD gets this way if I start dinner late.  If I get it stgarted before she's starving, I can usually distract her or give her a light snack and that solves it.

She also LOVES helping me stir supper, and throw away the veggie peels etc.  She's a big helper.

  • My daughter is only 12 months, but sometimes she gets like this.  I usually offer her a small snack while I'm getting the food prepared in cases like this.  Nothing to filling- maybe a cracker or a couple of cheerios.

  • I do a combo of giving him a snack/including in the prep work.  I let him stir, I'll hand him a bit of sausage (pre-cooked!) or bell pepper I'm slicing, have him help shake the seasonings in or dump/pour in ingredients.

  • I get up early and try to have her breakfast ready for her when she gets up. She naps around 12 so I try to get her lunch ready close to time for her to get up. With supper, her Daddy gets home while I'm fixing it so once he's home, who cares about what Mommy is doing? Give him a couple of snacks while you fix it or try to have it ready
