Hi all! Quiet (I think this is my first post?), practical-minded FTM here and first among my friends... I'm generally clueless on all this gear and options for baby! I am doing research and figuring out stuff way ahead of time (I'm only 17 weeks), and have realized there's a LOT of stuff out there and half of it is probably unnecessary. I'm creating my baby shower registry.
Basically, I'm on a budget and wondering what people use or prefer when it comes to play yards, floor/activity gyms, or swings. Or are they even comparable? They all kinda keep baby in a certain area, except for the floor gym which obviously if they're crawling they'll leave the scene if able.
I have a bassinet, and I think a swing/bouncer would be neat to have. I like the idea of a floor gym better than leaving baby in a pack n' go play yard, but maybe the play yard would be better, especially when traveling to grandparents' house?
Your thoughts/tips/advice are requested! Thanks
Re: Play yard crib vs. floor gym vs. swing/bouncer
Hi,Congrats on your baby
I can't say enough good about the Fisher Price Snugabunny Swing, this has been a lifesaver for us. It swings back and forth and also cradle swings. No batteries are needed since it plugs in,which saves $. It is a large item though, the base is about the same footprint as a recliner. But it is SO worth it.
We have a Pack n Play with the bassinet attached,my baby sleeps in it,and I figure I can use it for a safe place for him to play when he is older,or a good option if we travel overnight.. He also has a Fisher Price Animal Krackers jumperoo,he just started using this but really likes it. I put things on a wish list on Amazon, then I signed up at a website called camelcamelcamel.com and it sends me an email when the things on my wishlist are discounted.
I bought the swing for $99 using this site instead of the 120-130 it usually sells for. You might want to look for gear on Craigslist, usually some really great deals on there.
Oh, you will want a bouncer seat or a rock n play to take baby in the bathroom while you shower or a nice portable way to take baby from room to room.
Really the only things you will definitely want brand new are car seats and crib/mattress. Good luck
I also have a super basic graco swing. It uses batteries, but it is really efficient and I don't need to change the batteries that often.
I have a fisher price rainforest gym, it has light and music, its nice, but I would definitely consider buying one from craigslist or consignment store since it is not used for very long.
I would get a super basic bouncer, like Bright starts or something. my kiddos liked bouncing and grabbing for the toys on the toy bar.
I guess my recommendation is to keep things simple and get the more basic option.
definitely a swing, bouncer and play gym. The Fisher Price rainforest gym is great because it has blinking lights overhead which really entertains my kids (we had one by Baby Einstein and the babies didn't enjoy it as much because it didn't have overhead lights). Our babies also LOVE the Kick n Play Piano... it grows with your child and has 3 different settings
