3D ultrasound?

Hi ladies! Since this is my first pregnancy, I would love to get a 3D ultrasound done! But, I have no idea when its a good time to have one...any suggestions on how far along I should be to really make it worth it?

Re: 3D ultrasound?

  • Generally, sometime around 28 weeks.  Too early, and they look skeletal.  Too late, and they're often too large to get a good, clear picture.

  • I think I was 32-34wks and the images were amazing! Usually the place you get the u/s will tell you when is the best time.

Agreed.  No earlier than 26 weeks and no later than 28.  At least that's what our elective sonogram place tells us.

That is odd b/c the place i went to said the best time was in the 30-34wks, after that they said the baby is too big and you cannot get a good shot. I guess it all depends on the place

  • We have a local place that does them at 16 weeks to find out the sex of the baby early and then they recommend after 26 weeks.

  • I went with DD at 29 weeks and it was awesome. My SIL waited too long (like 34 weeks) and the pictures didn't come out that well because baby was so smushed in there.

  • Between 26 to 28 weeks is best. If you wait too long the baby will be deep into the pelvic area possibly in birthing position and you wont really see anything. Im 25 weeks I got a 3d ultrasound at 21 weeks I believe. I can see thr face but the face isnt fully developed. Im going to go back for another one
  • Depends on what all you're hoping to see.  The group I go to has both 2D and 3D so usually they'll just do 2D but sometimes they'll switch it over to 3D just to let you look.  I just had my NT screen done this week (i'm 12 weeks) and they showed me the baby in both 2D and 3D...but it refused to turn around so all I could see was the back side!  I still think it's amazing no matter when it's done Smile  Even at only 12 weeks all the body parts are there, we could see the big head, arms, legs, little tushie.  But if your group doesn't normally do them automatically and you need to pay to get one done somewhere, then i'd say to wait until late 2nd trimester.  A lot of speciality places will tell you the best time line for when to get one done depending on their methods (aka do they just show you the images, do you get pictures, a dvd, can you have guests, are you just looking at it for fun or finding out gender, etc).  Look into options that places around you offer.  Either way, enjoy, it's amazing to see regardless of the stage!  Just be aware the baby will look like a melty butter sculpture lol.
