HIV bloodwork results won't give over the phone??

I had my normal prenatal bloodwork with the HIV test. I have been called back in for a second ultrasound and a follow up appointment with the dr. I asked on the phone about my blood work because I had not heard anything and asked if that meant everything was normal? And she said "yeah.. Well the dr will go over the results with you in your follow up". This made me so nervous! I have read that they cannot give the results over the phone regardless of outcome... Is this true? Anyone else have experience with this! I'm worrying myself sick!

don't worry! I asked the same question and the office secretary on the phone just said "oh yea, it should be fine... he would have called you if anything was wrong i guess" (VERY reassuring... :P)

but everything was fine! so dont worry! :) and good luck! :)

  • I can't imagine them giving those type of results over the phone. Unless you've been engaging in some risky behavior, you are worrying yourself over nothing.

  • I work in a doctor's office, and as clerical staff, since we do not have any medical certification, we aren't allowed to look up/give out any test results. But either way, you shouldn't worry :)
  • I would not worry.  They would most likely call you in immediately and probably do another blood draw if anything came back suspect.  That was a friend's experience.

  • Its for your privacy. There is no way they can verify if they are truly speaking to you over the phone. So, its best not to worry yourself until your doctor sees you. My doctor's office does the same. If you have no reason to worry about HIV exposure then don't stress. It seems routine.

  • Yeah I had the work done a week ago on a Tuesday and the appointment was made after my u/s that Thursday. So I wouldn't imagine they would wait a week and a half to call me in to tell me.... Just hate a waiting game!

And no, no risky behavior just past partners of mine ad my husbands and neither of us have ever been checked. Just makes you a little nervous!

  • Yeah they should never give you those kind of results over the phone even if if its good . Just think if everyone who had good results were given them over the phone then you pretty much know if its not good !
  • HIV results are NEVER  given over the phone.  Regardless of the test results, they meet with you in person.
  • It is true. I actually ad a good friend in college who got an HIV test and they Did the same with him.

he tested positive though, so different scenario.

This. They can't tell you the results in case the person on the phone isn't actually you. They can't give you any sort of STD results or any other extremely private information on the phone for those obvious reasons.

  • My doctors office called me yesterday at lunch and told me I had to have a second glucose test, she told me everything else was fine but I will have to have an MMR vaccination after baby is born. So I would say no news is good news or they would have you in the office ASAP. I had an abnormal pap once and they called me in right away, but doc was delivering a baby so I waited in agony for 3 hours. It was nothing major but the wait is harder because we drive ourselves crazy.
  • No they did not mention the blood work at all when they made the appointment. They scheduled a follow up u/s and then a appt with the doctor. This was 2 days after the bloodwork when they made the appt and they made it for two weeks after that. When they called to confirm the appt I had not heard back on the blood work so I asked if everything was alright and she said "yes... Well she will go over things with you at your appt". I'm just worrying myself to death but I can't imagine they would have waited two weeks to call me in for a positive HIV result.
