Mobile: Family & Junk Food (Vent)

Does anyone else's family give you a hard time for not giving your LO junk food? I'm constantly getting pressure from family to give him fries, cake, ice cream, etc. DH and I are trying really hard to keep DS eating healthy. We don't want him introduced to junk food until later. My theory is if he's never tasted it he can't crave it. Obviously he's going to have cake and certain things at birthday parties etc. but just not at 8 months old. So many people act like I'm being crazy, overprotective, and ridiculous.

I even had one of his grandmothers say "O well when your mean mommy isn't around grandmom will give you some cake". I then responded with "Well if Grandmom is going to do that then she won't be watching DS alone for a while". I know that may seem harsh but she is the kind of person who will ignore anything we ask her to do with DS if she doesn't agree. So I feel like I need her to realize she's not mommy and it's not her choice to make. I think for me it's more of them not respecting my decisions as a parent. I know that him having a taste of ice cream or cake won't hurt anything but I'd really like to try and wait to introduce it to him until he's a little older. I want him to enjoy and like healthy options rather then prefer so much junk that I see so many little kids eating today.

At 8 months your position seems eminently reasonable to me.

I could have written this myself!! Except, my parents watch DS while we're at work and so they DO give him junk! Every day he has something.. whether it be pudding, ice cream, cookies or bits of chocolate, etc! It's such a battle sometimes.. DH and I keep asking them to STOP giving him crap, and yet they continue.. and then send us pictures of it! I really flipped when I saw they were giving him ginger ale in his sippy cup!! There is NO reason for a 9 month old to be drinking soda -- regardless if it's watered down!!

I know they think it's cute because he just "loves it", but it's super annoying.. and then I feel guilty if I ever want to indulge and share somethign "special" with him because I feel like I shouldn't since he's had enough crap during the week! Super annoying.

Anyway.. I hear ya! I am so looking forward to SAH for a while after DS 2 comes along!!

Stand your ground, mama! I didn't even permit DS to have any sweets on a regular basis until he was probably at least 18 months. He did have the occasional sweet (like ice cream or cake) and I don't think he ever tried cake for the first time until he was 11 1/2 months old. Our parents respect our wishes. Now that DS is 3, they're not as respectful or careful as I wish they would be. He recently wolfed down a whole plate of cookies that my MIL left on the table, like she didn't expect he was going to do that!?

I would flip out too! My 3-year-old has never tried soda and we don't plan to introduce it any time soon!

Thanks ladies! It's nice to know I'm not alone in this. We don't keep soda or sugary juices in our house and I'm really trying to make eating healthier a family thing. Both DH and I grew up in a household with a lot of junk food etc. and we really want something different for DS. It's easier to start him off with healthy eating habits then trying to fix poor eating habits later on. I think a lot of it is a generation thing too. My MIL for instance was giving DH rice cereal in his bottle at 1 month old, solids at 3 months, and junky snacks not far after.
