Babbling

So, I talk to DD. A lot. I listen to her, too. Her daddy reads several books to her every night - in addition to the ones we read during the day. She doesn't watch television. We listen to music or audiobooks if I need a little adult entertainment and she's awake.

And this girl just isn't babbling. She'll screech and ooohhhh and aaaaahhh and blow raspberries with the best of them, but the only consonant I hear her use on a regular basis is 'G,' and not strings of "guh," usually just once, mixed up in all of her merry exploration of screamy vowels.

I know every baby is different, and I'm trying not to worry. I suppose I'm just hoping mine isn't the only baby who is getting lots of input without much output!

Very minimal output here. My kid is like twice the age of yours though and at his age it is a concern. Has she been meeting what your pedi was looking for when it comes to vocal milestones? If so, I know it's hard, but try not to worry yet and keep doing what you're doing. She sounds pretty normal to me.

ETA: If she has a 9 month check up bring up your concerns with the pedi then. Hopefully you'll get some peace of mind Smile

I was just talking to my husband about the same concerns this week. I feel like we do everything we can with talking and reading to him, but I don't get a whole lot back yet.

Have you thought about using sign language to help your DD start to communicate more? We were given a sign language for babies book at our shower for B, and I am so excited to use it. They recommend starting to sign with your baby around 7 months, and say that by 14-15 months, a signing baby can remember and use up to 75 different signs where as a non- signing baby usually only has a vocabulary of about 10 words, if that... I can't remember the exact numbers from the book right now, but those are pretty close (I think- sorry if not!).

It may be worth looking into as a way of increasing your ability to communicate. Not to mention ASL is considered a language, and you could technically have a "bilingual" baby!

I hear ya!! I was worrying a lot about DS, too.. because he was screeching and "hoot owling" more than anything.. the only consonant he really says is "b".. and he just says babababa... but it comes in waves.. adn I can never get him to do it on command.. we just had his 9 month appointment last week and ped wasn't concerned at all

It'll come with time!! I'm convinced of that!!

We were in the same boat at around the same age, and DS had gross motor delays so we were particularly worred when his babbling was basically "ooh" and "ba" for everything along with all sorts of crazy jundle animal type screeches. The pedi talked about adding speech therapy if things did not accelerate, but before we could look into it too deeply, by 12 mos that changed, and he started ekeing out some words (mama took him till almost a year, for example). And while you need a degree in Toddlerology to understand what he is saying, DS now has lots of words and does some very basic (again, difficult to understand, but still present) 2-3 word sentences which seems to be on target, like "Daddy Maggie Walk" when DH takes the dog for a walk, etc.

I know it is nerve-wrakcing, but I'd give it till your 9 month appointment and see what the pedi says, I think she's in the realm of normal. ((Hugs)) for the worry.
