Provera ?

Have any of you taken Provera for regulation/to jump start AF?  Was it successful?  How did it change your cycle?  My dr said to start it today (or tomorrow, whenever i want as it doesn't matter where I am in my cycle ).  She also mentioned that Clomid might be something to think about down the road if necessary, but to regulate cycle first.

Background--ever since I stopped BFing in Oct, my luteal phase has been short.  It took 2 months before my cycle got back to 28-29 days, but LP was still 8-9 days.  So I made a dr. Appt to see about getting some meds, I've heard B6 and others can be prescribed to lengthen it.  I went to dr. On April 13th (cd 10) and it was good timing because I ended up getting AF 4 days early (giving me a 25 day cycle, 7 day LP). This was frustrating because even though it was only 9 days the previous two months, it had gradually been getting longer (up from 6 in December to 9 in March).   Dr did blood work & all came back "normal." She had me come back today for (I thought) follow up blood work for comparison & an U/S to make sure all looked okay.

Tody they did the U/S but no blood work.  This cycle I'm on Day 26 but haven't O'ed (as far as I know).  I got a +OPK & several days of CM  but no temp rise.  My temps aren't perfect, but they've always shown a consistent rise.  So that's a new prob.  Not sure if its late or if I'm not going to O this cycle.

She prescribed Provera to help regulate my cycle.  I'm to take 1 pill/day for 10 days for 3 months & then I'll go back to dr.  I've done a little Googling and read that Provera does not help you ovulate, just tricks your body into getting AF.  I also read that you won't ovulate while taking Provera. I'm really hoping it just means during the ten days im actually taking the pills, not all month long.

I know this isn't a TTC board but its pretty much the only one I lurk/ post on & thought I'd see if any of you had experience with Provera.  FTR--We are in our 4th cycle of TTC so I know it hasn't been that long, but clearly my body isn't back to normal.

TIA

I was prescribed Provera to force me to have a period after a 90 day cycle.  I clearly wasn't ovulating alone once I got off birth control (and still don't).  I think it was like you said, taking one pill for 10 days and then my period showed up several days later.  The Dr. had said it was hopefully going to jump start my normal cycle, but it didn't.  The cycle after was also 80-90 days and I had to take it again.  The cycle after was the one I got pregnant with Landon, but I didn't ovulate until cycle day 80, it was a complete accident that I caught it on an ovulation stick since I was temping!

I am not sure how it works to take it continuously for 3 months.  My new Dr. here is going to prescribe it the same way as my other Dr. Basically, if I don't have a period for 60 days, I get provera to force my body to have a period.  My issue is I don't ovulate, so I will most likely need a medication to help me do that unless I randomly do it alone like I did my cycle with Landon. I don't have much advice for the short LP!

I hope it works for you!   Good luck.

I have PCOS, so I don't ovulate.  I had to cycle with provera and then use another medication  to induce ovulation.

You're using it for a totally different reason.  In patients who don't ovulate, you're using the provera to force your uterus to shed its lining (which happens when you stop the provera).  In luteal phase defect, you ovulate, but you have a progesterone deficiency so the provera is used to support you to have a normal period/support an early pregnancy.

    Hope it helps you!
