Bringing a toddler to a baby shower?

My friend just texted me and asked if she could bring her toddler to my baby shower this weekedn.  The shower is at my mother-in-law's house.  I feel like it's partially her call, but I'm sure she doesn't care.  Is it common for people to bring their kids?

  • It's common but I wish ppl wouldn't.

  • There were several kids ages 3 months through 5 years at my shower, including a few toddlers.  It was no problem; they were mostly running around in another room with one of the moms.

It depends. It's common in my family, kids are always welcome at baby showers. That being said it's not for everyone. Some people never invite kids to a shower. I would ask the hostess before saying someone could bring a child.
  • It's common to bring babies and toddlers to baby showers in my family.  Showers usually end up being like one big family get together.

  • I think it's common.

Personally I find it odd to have "no kids allowed" at a shower to celebrate you having a kid lol
  • I suppose it depends. Mine was a coed shower, and all our friends have kids that play together so we all brought them.
  • Thanks for your input, I texted back that I would ask my mother-in-law.  I just think it would be harder because that would be the only child there and my mother-in-law's house is not that big for him to run around (and not baby proof yet).

  • I think it's pretty common. There will be kids at my shower.

They tend to detract from the actual point of the party. All of the attn seems to end up on the kids instead of the guest of honor.

  • There were no kids at my shower and it was really nice. Much more relaxed.

  • There were about 6 or 7 little kids at my shower and they actually helped out with bringing over the presents. They did crowd around me a little bit, but they were well behaved. I did not mind it and it did not detract from the baby shower, in my view.

  • Definitely common. I can understand why some people wouldn't want kids there, but I would never attend a shower where I couldn't bring my kid with me. Not everyone lives near family and can easily find a sitter and I find baby showers so boring that I would hardly be motivated to find someone to watch my daughter so I could attend alone.

  • Two of my friends are bringing their kids - one is a year and the other is about 9 months.  I am thrilled for 2 reasons.  One, I am not someone who loves being the center of attention so I am happy that there will be some adorable little ones around to get some of it. Two, I need me some baby time!!  I can't wait for my own to get here, but holding and cuddling with other people's is as good as it's going to get for the next 8 weeks or so and I need a fix!

  • I think if it is a formal event at a country club then I would say no.  If its at someone's house - by all means go ahead!  :)

  • Totally common, especially if showers are being held at someone's home.

I'd say it is up to you and your MIL.  Some people can't get child care, so it's a matter of them coming with their child, or not being able to make it at all.

It's very common, but it irks me. Don't get me wrong, I love kids, but I think it's kind of rude when someone RSVP's and tells you they're bringing their 3 kids. A lot of people have called my sister and RSVP'd and done this without really considering the cost of catered food, etc. Plus, I think it ends up being a distraction.

    Rock on.

  • I brought my almost 1 year old to my SIL's baby shower last year, and there were kids at my shower as well. I don't see a problem with it as long as the parents watch them! My other SIL is having a co ed baby shower this summer and it's a family event

  • I found out we have 4 coming to mine, which wasn't the hostess's plan. Only 1 is a holy terror, and I warned my best friend/hostess about him. We'll be at her parents' house, which has plenty of breakables. It's going to be nice out, so hopefully we can keep them outside and occupied with chalk and bubbles and things.

Small babies would be fine, since they aren't going to need constant supervision and entertainment. Toddlers are too much, IMO.

I wouldn't have minded at all. My 4 month old nephew came to my shower and I was thrilled. I didn't get much time to snuggle on him until later because I was talking to everyone but I was happy he could come.

  • In my experience it is not common. I've only been to kid-free showers (baby and bridal) and that's how I prefer it.
