C-sections

RCS

For those who have had a RCS, were you any less disoriented/"out of it" afterwards than with your first CS?  That was one of my least favorite parts...not remembering my or my husband's immediate reactions to the baby, first breastfeeding, etc.  Or is that just part of having the surgery?

Re: RCS

  • For me and many women I know who have had a RCS, it has been a lot easier the second time. I wasnt as tired from being in labor and I didn't have all the extra drugs in me either. I was well rested and in a great mood, except for a little nausea which I got meds for. I will be having another RCS and I am expecting nothing but smooth sailing.

  • My 2nd CS was a complete 180 from my first.  The first time around, I had been in labor for almost 23 hours, had an epidural and Stadol in my system, and was generally just exhausted.  The 2nd time around, I felt completely present and "with it" and as a result the whole experience was so much better.

  • I'm having my first RCS but I made sure to explain this same concern with my doc. He said to bring it up again at the c section and they will do their best to meet all of wants/needs. Also for me my 1st c section was after HOURS of horrible back pain and 2 epis. So I am thinking since I'm going in scheduled it will be a lot better. I won't already be exhausted and full of drugs.

You don't mention the circumstances of your first CS but for me both of mine happened with no labor beforehand so I was never really, really out of it. However, the anesthesiologist during my second did some new pain relief treatment after the surgery, as opposed to the morphine they gave me after my first, and I was less doped up and out of it.

Yeah, I would be curious to know what all affects how "out of it" you are.  I was in labor for 15 hours beforehand, no epi or painkillers but I did have pitocin...and then of course when they did the CS I had a spinal.

I would bet yours had a lot to do with how exhausted you were after labor. It will probably be much better for you this time. I'd recommend avoiding the morphine if they have an alternative because I was so much more clear headed without it. Sorry I have no idea what they used on me instead. GL!
