High-Risk Pregnancy

Chronic High BP

Anyone have high blood pressure before getting pregnant?  How has it impacted you?  Everything I've read thus far has indicated it increases my chance of pre-E, so I'm concerned.  I just got my BFP and haven't met with my doctor yet, so I'm just triying to find out what others have experienced or learned.

Re: Chronic High BP

  • I have chronic high bp other then needing to change meds to a pregnancy safe one the only difference is you will see a high risk ob.

This, plus I see a cardiologist that specializes in high risk OB patients.

  • Thank you!  One more question, does chronic HBP automatically make you high-risk?

I have HBP and stage 3 kidney disease and am definitely considered high risk.  Both were diagnosed before my BFP so my nephrologist put me on BP meds that would be safe if we did get pregnant since he knew we would be trying soon.  I'm 20 weeks and so far my BP has been under control but they said they'll probably have to adjust the meds as I get further along.  I've been told I'm at a high risk for pre-e.

I see my nephrologist once a month and am currently seeing my OB every two weeks, everyone wants to monitor me very closely.

Hoping this one stays put a little longer

  • Totally new here sorry, I had hbp before getting pregnant, what's pre-e?
  • I had chronic high bp pre pregnancy. During my first pregnancy my bp was perfect and I got no extra monitoring... until I got pre e at 29 weeks. This doesn't happen to everyone though. We had other complications after this and ultimately lost our son. High bp during pregnancy is actually pretty manageable so long as your dr knows what to look for. This pregnancy I've gotten a lot of extra monitoring and I've been on bp meds right along and so far things are looking good. Congrats on your bfp!

  • I have Chronic Hypertension also and mine wasn't controlled at all with DD. So, I developed pre-eclampsia at 28 weeks with her and she was born at 29 weeks.

I had to do a baseline 24 hour urine, growth scans and was supposed to have NST's starting at 32 weeks but never made it that far.

This time, I am seeing the OB every 2 weeks. baseline 24 hour urine at 9 weeks, I will do another in a week and I have growth scans with the MFM.

I'm on Labetolol this time and it is controlling my BP much better than Aldomet did with DD. So, I think the most important thing is to make sure your BP is well controlled. Get lots of rest. Drink lots of water. I'm also taking extra calcium, Vitamin D, and Fish Oil and baby aspirin along with my BP med and prenatal.

So, to answer your question...yes, you are considered high risk simply because you have CHBP. It increases your risk for pre-e a lot. Just be careful. Watch for any swelling, headaches, visual changes and rises in BP above 130/90.

Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy! :)
