Low fluid

So I have been having symptoms of pre-clampsia  and my dr's have been watching me closely, I have been having on and off high blood pressure (which before pregnancy I have never had high blood pressure) I also have swollen everywhere and have tried everything to get it to go down. Well they have given me two NST's and two 24 hour urine. Both coming back normal. Well at my last u/s they told me she was 5lbs 10oz and her fluid is low, they set me up for another u/s this monday to heck my fluid again. I'm also 2 1/2cm dilated and %50 effaced. I have been told by some of my family members that because i'm concidered full term, if they check me again and it's still low fluid there might be a chance that i'll get induced, could this really be an option?

Re: Low fluid

  • This is mostly what happen with me with first child. First had low AF and had stop growing at 33ish wks, and pere Induced that night with her.

And now on my second. They did an u/s on me last Friday I also had "different feel" of fetal movements, if that makes sense. So they induced me that night and I now am holding her in my arms.

Sometimes it is better for the baby to just come out then have them inside, especially if you have low fluid, and pere. Hope everything turns out well. T and P heading your way.

  • I was faced with this same situation about two weeks ago.  My fluids were low and I was told to increase my water intake to about 64 oz.  I actually only did about 48 oz. and also to drink electrolytes such as Gatorade or PowerAde.  It actually brought my fluid levels back up.  But if they do stay low and don't increase after increasing your water and electrolytes they more than likely will induce you.  It's also a possibility that they will check you in to L&D for IV fluids before they make the decision to induce. So don't worry. Just drink plenty of water and you should be fine. I live in the south and the weather is warming up and I think that I just got a little dehydrated one day when I was working outside. Also caffeine can dehydrate you and I was kind of hitting the Cokes and sweet tea kind of hard that week.

How low is your fluid? My fluid was low with DD (hovered around 7 whatevers), and was not induced.  I was put on Pit. when my water broke-it was a slow leak at 39 weeks.

To be honest with you, no one tells me anything, I was just told is was boarder line low, most of the time it's my dr's schedualing my appointments for an ultrasound and my ultrasound tech bitching because they don't know why i'm there.

I drink water like crazy, i'm always thursty and then on top of that I have had dehydration problems since I was 14, and I have a naughty naughty habit of drinking caffeine and that just started. I have noticed though that most of whats going on with me such as the high blood pressure and the swelling is because of the low fluid. I'm just worried because she is a little tiny I need her in there for a little bit longer but I want to say thank you so much for the advice. Very helpful.

I understand what you mean about the different movements, hers have been more painful, and she still moves quite a bit. I mean if they decide to induce me i'm a bit scared but excited but my biggest fear is that she did stop growing. Or she's not putting on weight.

Thank you for your advice it's appreated C:

Popping in from March. At 40 5, my OB ordered an ultrasound for me and saw that my fluid was low. Without giving us any options or opportunity for us to ask questions, she insisted on inducing me that day. I wish I had known that I could try to increase the AF by increasing my water intake. DD was born the next day after an induction that failed I only dilated to 3 cm after 18 hours of drugfree labor, and ended up having a CSection.
