Hi everyone! I'm new here but not new to the TTC world or to parenting
by now. My wife and I have a 2 year old son and I'm currently 14 weeks
pregnant with our second. We used the same donor so they will be full
siblings. We conceived our son on our 3rd IUI and this one on our 2nd -
both were unmedicated except for a trigger. While it sounds relatively
easy, it was a long journey!
Just to give some background on us,
I'm American and my wife is German and we live in Germany primarily due
to DOMA (I can't sponsor her for a greencard and she doesn't have the
qualifications for an employment-based visa). Living in Germany has its
perks but not when it comes to starting a family. Same-sex couples are
denied access to fertility treatment and third party adoption.
It
was fairly easy for us to find fertility clinics willing to work with
us in Denmark and we consulted with three before we chose one but once
we were on the cusp of our first IUI (based solely off an OPK), we
realized it wasn't realistic. We had to either drive 10+ hours one-way
or buy expensive last-minute plane tickets. The stress was overwhelming
to say the least and we canceled even though we really liked the
clinic.
Although we felt hopeless and depressed, we continued
our search (wishing we spoke more languages than English and German!!)
and eventually found a clinic in Belgium. The drive was "only" 5 hours
one-way which was difficult but somehow manageable and on the 3rd try, I
got pregnant. The second time around also was not without
complications but it was much easier simply because we knew what we were
doing, how we wanted to do it and who would help us along our way. We
also went straight to monitoring and using a trigger (which we only used
the 3rd and successful time the first time around) and fortunately got
pregnant the second time. We're so thankful it happened so quickly and
now we just hope this pregnancy continues to go as smoothly as the first
one!
I've read through some of the posts and you seem like a
very supportive group! I wish we had found you sooner and I'm looking
forward to getting to know you all better!
