Trying to Get Pregnant

I guess I wasn't ready for that

I have a long history of infertility.  I also have a long history of losses, some early, one that happened pretty late in the game.  I need progesterone support to get pregnant and stay pregnant, I take crinone, p17, metoformin, clomid, and estrogen.  This month is supposed to be the last just clomid cycle before starting IUI.  My RE called me today and asked me if I could come in next week, which I thought at first he was postponing my scan, but this is in addition to.  He wants to talk to my husband and I about skipping IUI and going right to IVF.  I def want to be pregnant sooner rather than later, but I wasn't ready for that call.  I'm going to go and listen to his reasoning, keep an open mind...consider all the options, but we've never done IVF before.  We got close once, actually were going to start August of the summer I got pregnant with my son.  I literally got pregnant at the end of July....so it was close and I was geared up to do it then, but it took me a long time to get to that point.

So talk to me about IVF.  I can go to the trouble trying to conceive board, but I like you ladies.  Its been almost 4 years since I've even thought in that direction.  Take me through the process....I can't imagine being on more hormones than I already am.

  • I have no experience with IVF, but I wanted to wish you luck with your journey.

You're already so brave and strong with everything you have been through.

  • No personal experience, but just wanted to wish you good luck on making this decision!

  • I would suggest cross posting this on 3T or on the IF board. The IF board has a lot of women going through IVF. A lot of us lurk and participate on several boards but I think you would get more response from the Trouble TTC board since they may see it there first.

I don't have any experience but a lot of ladies do and I know they will help you understand it. Good luck!

ETA: I can't see siggies, but if you have anything like pics of your son in it please put in a ticker or siggy warning if you cross post on the other boards.

  • I have no experience with it but, I wanted to wish you the best of luck making this decision. I guess it's one thing to make this decision after other efforts have not worked & a totally other thing to have your Dr try to speed things up before your mind even goes there. I would also suggest XP on 3T & maybe IF, I think you may find more IVE experience there. hugs!

Do what you feel comfortable and are ready to do.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.
  • (((Hugs)))

I did a fresh IVF cycle about 2 years ago and have just gotten started on a frozen cycle.

Like BP said, the meds depend on what protocol your doctor recommends for you. I did an antagonist protocol. I took BCP for a month and then started stimming with Menopur and Bravelle. I stimmed for 11 days (adding Ganirelex in toward the end). I started PIO on the day of retrieval and continued with it until I was around 8 or 9 weeks. There was Estrace in there somewhere, too.

I was a little uncomfortable the last few days before retrieval. It seemed like I could actually feel my ovaries. They retrieved 31 eggs, 24 were mature, and 13 fertilized normally. We did a 5 day transfer of two, and I got pregnant with one. We had 8 that made it to freeze.

The retrieval process was fairly easy. The last thing I remember before conking out was expressing my concern about falling off the table. :) I woke up in recovery and felt pretty good. I was a little sore for a day or two (and very tired that first day).

I was awake for the transfer, but it wasn't bad at all. I would compare it to a pap. The most uncomfortable thing for me was having to have a full bladder. I spent the whole time willing myself to not pee on my RE. :)

Feel free to PM me if I can answer any questions for you. Wishing you the best of luck!
