Haircut advice?

My little man is 2.5 and we're having a problem with haircuts. I've tried everything I can think of- treats during and after, scissors, clippers, letting him watch his favorite movie or tv show during, etc. Nothing has worked.

He's coming up on needing a trim and I'm not sure what to do. The only idea I have is to let him "help" me cut my SO's hair, but SO is in the current phase of growing out his hair and beard and really doesn't want a trim.

Has anyone else gone through this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • I give my kiddos a lollipop and turn on some cartoons. Have you tried one of those electronic hair trimmers? It may be faster.

We've tried popsicles and cartoons, he still screams, cries and squirms away.

I've been looking at a pair of electric clippers that are "for kids", they're suppossed to be quieter. Right now we get it done as quick as possible and offer treats and tv. *sigh* I'm just at the end of my rope with it. If I take him to a kid cuts place I doubt it'll go any smoother.

A co-worker used to have the same problem with her son and she found that once he "helped" cut his daddy's hair that he was fine with it. But SO is being stubborn about letting me trim his hair.

  • What about cutting a doll's hair? Or stuffed animal?
  • My DS likes to help with his haircuts. I let him hold the water spray bottle after i get his hair wet. Sometimes he gets to squirt me afterward, which he thinks is hilarious. He also holds the comb for me and helps comb his hair too. I also explain that it's dangerous for him to move around and he understands he must listen to me when something is dangerous.

  • The only thing that works for us is to take him to a salon and have us sit where he can't see us. He behaves way better for the stylist when he doesn't know we are there. It's a kids salon so they have the car-chairs that we can strap him in, movies, and lollipops. That combination usually works for us, plus the stylists are really good at cutting a wriggly toddler's hair.

  • We cut DS1's hair outside in our backyard.  We set him up in a chair on my lap, while DH cuts his hair.  Maybe that will work?

That actually might work. I'll have to see what I have that we can use.

Thanks for the advice y'all, I'm sure we'll figure something out... I hope!

  • My son is the same way. He turned 2 in February and we tried very unsuccessfully at 1 yr, 15 months, 18 months, and 21ish months. I ended up doing it myself. I had no idea how to do it, but figured it out enough. When he wouldn't even let me cut it, I did it in his sleep. It surely isn't a perfect system, but it did get cut. We had tried EVERYTHING...snacks, phones, videos, books, stickers, sitting on my lap, etc. He was unconsolable. That was not worth it to me, so I did it.
