Pregnant after 35

39 and first time preggers

I am 39 and this is my forst time pregnant. Still so wowed to say. I am almost 5 weeks. Is it normal to be scared to be excited? I haven't told many people as I'm afraid to jinx it. I also feel slight cramps like I am getting me period. Lastly I had RYN surgery a year ago this month. Anyone else in this crazy boat of mine??

Re: 39 and first time preggers

  • Congrats on the BFP!!!!  I will be 39 on Monday but I am pregnant with #2.  It is totally normal to be scared and excited.  I feel like it gets you prepared for Mommyhood.  The worry never stops :)

    Welcome and H& H 9 months :)

  • Congrats!! I'm 37 and this is my first as well, I can completely understand how it feels odd to say "I'm pregnant" I still feel funny saying it. I had the same cramping at 5weeks. This is the most exciting time of our lives!!

  • Thanks and same to you! So nervous, just want to be at 12 week mark!
  • Thanks so much! It doesn't help that I am a worrier by nature either! I just want to be at the 12 week point then I feeling ill be able to breath a bit! Congrats to you too!!
  • Congrats! I'm pregnant with my first at 36 -- due next month. I think there's a particular thrill that comes with experiencing this for the first time in the late 30s. My husband and I kept it to ourselves until 12 weeks, because we were nervous to share too soon, but I know lots of people spill the beans sooner. Anyway, welcome!

  • Hi and congratulations!! I'm 39 and pregnant with my second - but my first was 14 years ago, so this totally feels like my first LOL

We're waiting until the 12 week scan next week before announcing too, altho I'm the size of a house so it feels a bit obvious  :)

Congratulations!  I'm 38 turning 39 this month and 10 weeks along with my first!  Shock of my life since fertility treatments (minus trying IVF) didn't work for me and being told 2 years ago I had less than 10% chance I'd ever conceive.  It's exciting and oh-so-scary!

  • Congrats on your first.. How exciting. I am 39 and will be 40 when baby number 2 comes. I felt like you did for a good 3 weeks after I found out.

  • I'm in your boat too.  Had my 40th birthday party last month and pretty sure I conceived about a week later.  We just started really trying in January so it was only the second month of the fertility monitor and sticks, so needless to say, especially at my age, I was shocked and still nervous about the rate of miscarriage etc.  All that being said, I am just staying really positive and taking all the aches and pains (like my first running to the bathroom for morning sickness today) as good healthy signs that things are progressing as they should!  My favorite moment though, was when I called my OB to make an appointment last week after the positive pregnancy test thinking she would see me right away.  The nurse explained that they wait until 7-10 weeks for the first OB appointment and I had a little meltdown saying "but I'm 40, aren't there exceptions when you're 40???"  :):)  Congrats everyone!

  • I'm 40 and first time pregnant. I am 6 weeks along (in two days). I've had cramping all along. I don't have any morning sickness and while my boops do feel bigger, they don't hurt. That's it for symptoms (so far).

    Some questions:

How much exercise is ok? I am an AVID exerciser. I don't want to overdue it but I also know that exercise is very important. I swim, bike and run. I plan to continue swimming but only run 3 - 5 miles max. I will continue yoga and weights as I'm able. Safe or stupd to bike? I road and mountain bike. If I bike, how many more weeks can I do this?

What's a good amount of weight to gain? I had a surprise pregnancy. We were using condoms! I'm not underweight, but just borderline at barely 120 pounds and 5'7". So - surprise when I found out as I thought that I would have to gain weight and quit racing to get pregnant. I want to be healthy. I don't have a big appetite. I always hear people say that US women gain too much weight when pregnant. I want to be healthy but not use this an excuse to overeat and stop exercising either. :)

  • I will be 39 next month and I am 5 weeks along with my first. I am excited scared but I am trying to just enjoy every moment. I was told by a fertility specialist that my only real chance of conceiving was with in vitro. We decided that was not for us gave up the dream of having a baby. Four months later I conceived naturally! I guess doctors don't know everything.

Ask your MD office, but they usually want you to keep your HR below 140 and core temp under 101 (I think) AND I was told no heavy lifting (over 25 lbs).  I wouldn't mountain bike so much if it's on tough terrain, just because you don't want to fall and pull something.  Those ligaments get weirdly loose at odd times.  I almost pulled my finger out of the socket washing my hands a few weeks ago (yes, washing my hands!!).

I'm 38 and this is my first after one miscarriage so I'm a little extra cautious (plus I've been on meds for crazy nausea and vomiting) so I envy anyone who can still exercise.  I feel like a slug!

  • Congrats and thanks for sharing, I turned 39 in January and I am due with my first in Dec am so excited too. I cannot wait for my first appointment on 4/15.  This would hv been my 2nd had an ectopic in 2007 so am excited anxious crazy all at the same time and cannot tell friends and family yet till ultrasound.  We shall encourage each other.  All shall be well.
  • First, congratulations!!  I am also a FTM at 39... I am currently 34w+2 with identical girls.  My DH and I are anxious and scared all at the same time.  I am wondering if anyone is totally prepared!!

    Good luck to you!

  • I'm 41 and 26 weeks along! We had been trying for a long time ~ excited and nervous combined. Hubby is already talking about having 1 more ~ I just want to get thru this one first and then we can talk. Congrats to all us older moms :)
  • I'm 38 and 7 weeks today. You are so lucky on the no morning sickness. I am in a constant state of "motion sick" all day long.

On the exercise question I spoke with my Dr yesterday and she said that heart rate needs to stay at 140-150, absolutely no higher. Should be able to talk. I am an avid biker and runner, but I can't do the running because I have found that I can't keep my heart rate down. I am spinning 3 days a week, but wearing a HR montior and trying to keep it around 140 for a heartrate. Need to also sit by a fan as you are not supposed to overheat either. My husband and I have been talking about biking outdoors and are on the fence. Talked about taking the clips off the road bike to help ensure no falling (I have a tendency to forget to unclip lol). I think the biggest dangers are falling or getting hit by a car (too many people not paying attention)- so I can't decide if it is worth the risk.

That said my doctor said to that spinning is a great alternative along with swimming. So I am leaning towards keeping it indoors and in a more controlled environment. Also need to make sure you are eating the calories you burn from exercise.

    Good luck!

  • I'll be 39 tomorrow and am 5 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I'm so glad to see there are people out there going through the same thing as me! I too am afraid to tell anyone (my HCGs are low, but doubling which is scary), so far my boyfriend and I are the only ones who know. My mom and I are very close, so it's driving me crazy not telling her, but I don't want her to worry. Are most of you waiting to tell people until after screening tests?

    Update 5/14/13:

My HcG has dropped & miscarriage is pretty certain at this point. Wish you all the best & hope that I'll be pregnant again soon.
