Solids and poop

Started solids 5 days ago. Did 4 days of 1 tbsp of banana pure and then did 1 day of 1 tbsp of avocado. We had a poo every day after the banana, which is great since he was EBF and was only going every few days. But since the avocado he has had thick streaks, and were very small. I don't think it's constipation because its not hard pellets. Just wondering if anyone else has seen a big change in their baby's poops?

  • Yes, I say a difference in how his poop changed. My LO, without a hesitation, poops when I put him in his high chair. He strains really hard to where his face turns red but it all comes out.

When I make his purees I just water. Even in the avocado and banana. (I usually mash those two together) I put a little bit of water (or apple juice (I use the Motts for Tots)) just until I have the right consistency.

  • D did not handle Avocado well. When I eat it it makes him very gassy. When I tried giving it to him it made him gassy and slowed down his poops and they were not the normal seedy BM. He seemed really uncomfortable so we are skipping avocados for now.

  • When we first started solids K had a hard time going. But we give him water through out the day every couple of days. No more than an ounce in a 24 hour period. It keeps him regular and makes it easier for him to go.

  • When Madeline started solids, it definitely changed her poop. It's not liquid, yellow and seedy anymore. She pooped everyday until I started introducing solids. It's totally normal for them to be constipated when starting solids. It definitely made DD constipated. She only pooped every 4-5 days after introducing solids the 1st two weeks. I was concerned and even bought her Pedia lax liquid glycerin suppositories to get her to poop. It worked, but I only used it on her once. I finally got her a probiotic to help with her bowel movements and it's been AWESOME! Works sooo great. I highly recommend the brand Baby BioGaia probiotics to help with constipation and stomach issues. It's the best, but super expensive!

I started with giving her oatmeal cereal mixed with my breastmilk 1-2 times a day for the 1st week. It was new and she didn't really like it. She didn't eat a lot of it, and it was more like practice of eating with a spoon and introducing food. She got better at it and after two weeks of 'eating practice', I introduced other purees like peas, sweet potatoes, avocados, butternut squash, carrots and prunes. I hear it's recommended to start with veggies first. If they taste the sweetness of fruits first, they might not want the veggies afterwards. I mixed a lot of her purees with my breastmilk so she'd like it more. I bought a bunch of the Gerber baby purees and fed it to her first. After feeding it to her and saw no food allergies, I started making my own baby food in the Baby Bullet. It took DD 2 weeks after introducing solids for her constipation issues to go away. Some days her poop is more solid or mushy depending on what she eats. It's gross and sometimes it looks the same coming out as it did going in. Oh and it's sooo stinky now! Oh the joys of parenthood! Love it! =)

  • Poops have definitely changed. We have done bananas, peaches, peas, and starting squash today. The bananas made pooping difficult and the peaches and peas seemed to make hin more regular. We also just switched formula per Pedi so I'm hoping we don't have any issues.

We had a normal seedy one today after the avocado passed. So I think we will try other foods for now.
  • DD's poop seems to change with every solid change. We did rice cereal for awhile and then switched to oatmeal. The rice made her go multiple times a day, while the oatmeal made her go less often and made her stools harder. We haven't done any veggies yet, but I would assume it's a normal change for their little bodies to get used to everything.
