1st Trimester

Second ultrasound after first was too early at ~5 weeks...

I went in for my first u/s on 4/25 assuming I was about 7 weeks based on my LMP. U/S showed gestational and yolk sak and a "dot" but tech said I looked to be about 4-5 weeks. My OB called and set up another u/s on 5/7 and immediately following with an appt with the Dr. I am just concerned about the Dr. visit.. She told me at my first appt I wouldn't need to come back until around 12 weeks... Any ideas on why they would need me back in? I will either be about 7 weeks then, or i will have miscarried. I had blood work done on the 23rd and have not heard anything back so I am assuming all was well, but they wouldn't be waiting until then and after another u/s if something was up with the bloodwork I would not think.

I have worried myself SICK about this and of course husband doesn't have a care in the world he is just excited! HELP!

  • TYPO! First u/s on 4/25. Yes that is what they told me when they scheduled this next u/s.. that they generally only called when something was abnormal.

Oh, well, then. That's ok, too.  Most docs want you to come in around 8 weeks so they can see the heartbeat - your doc couldn't see it because you were earlier than you thought, so you just have to have another one so they can get the usual info they had hoped to get.  Don't worry.

This. Depending on how sure you were of your O date/how long your cycles are, measuring 2 weeks off can be a bad sign. If you know your O date from using OPKs or charting and it was still 2 weeks off, the pregnancy may not be viable. If you are going strictly from you LMP then it really depends on how long your cycles are.

The LMP dates are based on a 28 day cycle in which ovulation takes place on CD 14. This is not the case for everyone, or even most people.

If your cycles are generally shorter than 28 days (especially 24 and under) This may be a problem. That means you probably Od by CD14, making your dates correct, and thus meaning the u/s shows less growth than it should.

If your cycles are generally longer than 28 days (especially if they are over 31 days): Then you may have nothing to worry about.

Early ultrasounds can be off by as much as 5-7 days without there being a problem. So if you normally have a 35 day cycle, and you ovulated on CD 21 that would make your u/s only 7 days off and within the normal range.

I hope this helped, and wasn't too confusing (I tend to ramble) if you need me to clarify anything, let me know.

  • We were not keeping up with ovulation dates. I had just come off of birth control at the end of January and honestly didn't think it would happen this quick - but happy it has! :) I have read coming off of the bc can throw off your cycle and o dates for a bit so I am hoping this is where the miscalculation is.. :(
