prenatal vitamins

I was wondering if you are all taking them while TTC? Did you start taking them before you started TTC? I got some from my MW when I got my IUD out, but we're going to use condoms until my cycle evens out, so there's no need to start them until then, right? Also, any favorite brands that you would recommend that are not too pricey?

You want to at least take daily folic acid for 3 months prior if you can.  I really like the women's one a day pre-natals and now walmart makes an equate version of them.  They seem to be the most complete ones out there and waaay cheaper than some of the others.

They are a good idea to start taking whenever.  I was taking them even while on the bcp for a bit.

I use Platinum easymulti-prenatal.  My sister and I have both tried Jamieson prenatal as well and both agree it tastes worse.

You absolutely need to start taking them while TTC.  You need to have the proper amount of folic acid in your body to prevent birth defects.  I have not started TTC yet but I am already taking a prenatal vitamin just to make sure I have enough of what I need before conceiving.  I take Rainbow Light Prenatal One Vitamins because they are easy on your stomach.  It was $26 for 150 pills.

My doctors always told me that if I was child bearing age and there was even a chance of getting pregnant then I should be taking them. They contain essential nutrients for a growing fetus and from what I understand, the fetus needs some of those nutrients in the first couple weeks. I think folic acid is one nutrient that is important in the first couple weeks of development. I use Rainbow Light. My MW's suggested that brand.

    That's my understanding anyways.

When we started ttc, I started taking prenatal vitamins (and also made my dh start taking a multivitamin).

I take ultra mega green prenatal from GNC. They're like $15 for a one month supply. My doctor prescribed me one and they wanted $64 for them....so gnc it was!

Before having DS I started taking them a couple months before TTC, and I haven't stopped taking them since then (pregnant, then nursing, then just in the habit so why not).

I like the Nature Made Prenatals - when I was researching brands/etc these were said to be one of the easiest to absorb. Also, at the store I buy them they frequently have buy 1 get 1 free sales. :)

I don't do the ones with DHA and I don't take any DHA separately either. The normal DHA made me gag (smell like fish) and I couldn't even take them. So I started taking DHA gummies and that was ok, but I honestly don't see the point.

So any woman that doesn't take them prior to getting pregnant will have a baby born with birth defects? Right. ::eyeroll::

OP, I had never taken a PNV a day in my life before I got pregnant with DS. He's perfectly healthy.

Taking a PNV while TTC is a great idea because it gives your body the right amount of nutrients it needs but you don't "absolutely need to". I take them because I researched the benefits.

The nurse at my ob/gyn office recommended that I start taking them 1 month before TTC. I told her that I've been taking the CVS brand and she said that's fine. I've also heard good things about the Target brand and Nature Made.

PNV should have enough FA in it.  That's why it's a PNV.  It's always good to check the label and make sure, though.

I took OTC prenatals for about 5 years before TTC. I am on Rx PNV now. Even if you are not actively TTC as A pp said, if you are of child bearing age and may get pregnant it is a good idea. Too, there are some pretty convincing studies out that show a strong correlation between increased folic acid intake and decreased risk/incidence of uterine cancer and related problems.

So, in conclusion, folic acid, do it.

Most pre-natals have 800mcg of folic acid in them.  That is enough unless you have something in your medical history that means you need more.  If you just take a regular multi they have 400mcg, you can always add some extra to that, folic acid is super cheap.

I started taking them the day my IUD came out. And if memory serves, I also took them while TTC DS in 2008. I just picked up a bottle of the Spring Valley brand from Walmart for like $8.

You should start taking them for sure! When I called to make my appointment to get my BC out the doc said to start taking them then just to make sure they are in my system etc. I would start taking them now even if you arent TTC for a while. I use the target brand ones.

I take the vitafusion gummies, they're practically candy, along with an iron supplement.  Added benefit - my nails and hair are amazing since I started taking them.  A few friends asked what I was doing different to my hair and how I managed to make my nails look like I had a perma-manicure.  Now, they're taking them as a cheap and effective addition to their beauty regimen!

I started taking them in January. I just want to throw out there that if you have other prescription medication, make sure you check with your doctor on when to take the PNV. My endo told me not to take the PNV at the same time or anytime near why I take my levothyroxine because something in the PNV can keep the levothyroxine from being absorbed properly. I didn't research it or question it, I just did what she said, so if someone else knows something different, feel free to correct me or throw it out there.

I started them about a year before we TTC, mainly because I had heard they were good for hair and nails and I was growing my hair out for our wedding. My hair was definitely the healthiest it had ever looked long, so they may have helped. I use the Whole Foods house brand, I think it's called 365.

I started them in October I think per Dr since we were going to start TTC soon. She said they would not hurt.

I just changed brands about a month ago. Love my new ones. I can slowly see changes in my nails not breaking and splitting as much. I am taking New Chapter prenatal and Nordic Natural DHA taste like strawberry. They do make another DHA prenatal without the strawberry but it tastes good and no fishy after taste. You have to take 3 of one and two of the other and they are a bit more expensive but I like them and seem like they are helping my hair, skin and nails more as well. Never noticed any change on the other brands.

You can ask your Dr if they prefer a certain brand. Mine did not.
