Luch Meat?

Hi Ladies,

I was curious since its one of those things where some say its ok and some say no....

Do you feed your LO lunch meat? As in turkey breast lunch meat with cheese on bread?

I have heard that it is ok no matter what as long as you heat it up first but am still unsure. Your input would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks and have a beautiful day!

  • I don't at home, but he's had a couple bites of sandwiches I've got from a deli in town. It wasn't heated up the times he's had it.

  • I give it to DD.  She doesn't have it everyday or anything, but she brings turkey or ham to school a handful of times a month.  Never heated, but I also ate unheated lunch meat pregnant (and still do).  My concern with lunch meat is the sodium content and way it was processed.  I try to buy the kinds that aren't as processed as others.

  • Are you heating it up for the listeria worry?  That never even occurred to me.

We don't do a lot of lunch meats for the little guy - as pp said, more for the preservatives than anything else (especially the sodium!)  But I'll give it to him every now and again (and I try to buy the least processed - low sodium, nitrate free kind).

  • DS won't touch it, so no.

I tried giving it to him because he needed more protein, but I looked for the kind without nitrates, lower in sodium, etc. I never heated it up, but have attempted to give him bite of my own (warm) sandwiches when we've eaten out. He acts like it's the worst food on earth and won't let it anywhere near his mouth.

  • My girls love lunch meat. Usually they'll have it for lunch. I've done turkey and roasted chicken.  I usually heat it up but I've given it to them cold as well. I never thought about it being a problem though....so i'm glad you posted this.

  • My pedi said it's okay.  She said if that's the only protein she'll eat then give it to her.  Just don't buy the cheap slimy kind.

Low Sodium turkey is on LO's lunch menu nearly every day.  She loves it. We just started giving it with a half of a tortilla wrap and some cheese, and she gobbles it down.  The brand name low sodium has 50% less than regular lunch meat.  We don't heat ours up either.

  • Yes, she's had ham and turkey. I buy an organic brand, no nitrates...when she had it it's one slice with cheese usually. I give it about once a week and so does dc.

  • No, honestly we just don't eat much of it to begin with. So it's never been presented.

  • We do. She loves sandwiches, and we eat them for lunch.
  • I don't, but I'm a whole-foods, avoid-processed-stuff, you-probably-find-me-annoying food purist snob when it comes to the food that I purchase/make for myself and my family.

I would absolutely not side eye you for giving your kid a (healthy) lunch meat; you can make the best decisions for your family, not me.

If, however, you want to avoid the lunch meat, you can grill/broil/bake an extra chicken breast, slice it thinly (diagonally) and have better tasting lunch meant than you'd get in the store, cheaper.
