Pregnant after 35

CVS this week....

Has anyone else had this done?  Just wondering what your experiences were.

TIA

Re: CVS this week....

  • Personally, I didn't have it done since there is a risk of miscarriage with it....although it is small.

  • Have you considered the MaterniT21 or Verify blood tests? They are new non-invasive tests (of the mother's blood) that check for the same chromosomal abnormalities as the CVS/Amnio. They aren't covered by all insurance companies, but the lab that does the T21 test (Sequenom) quoted me a max out of pocket charge of $200.

  • Yes but we felt the CVS was better for us in our situation.  Had an amnio with DD 5 years ago and that was fine but just no experience with this test.
  • I had one 4 years ago with my second child, b/c I had gotten a false positive with the NT test.  It was ok; mildly uncomfortable as they were inserting the needle (I have a tipped uterus and they had to try several times), but that was it.  I didn't have any spotting or anything afterwards, but rested the remainder of the day.  Luckily he was perfectly fine - the stress of waiting was worse than the test.

    Good luck to you!

  • Thank you!
  • I had a cvs and it was slightly uncomfortable during the procedure, but nothing painful. I rested the remainder of the day and had no problems. For me the very small risk of miscarriage was worth having the test done.

  • We opted for Amnio instead of CVS, so I have no idea how CVS is, but just wanted to wish you good luck, hope everything goes well.
  • I had cvs and it was painless and easy. It felt like a pap exam. You just want to make sure you go to a doctor with a lot of experience who specializes in cvs. I had my results by 11 weeks 2 days and was relieved. I took a day of after and was on bedrest as a precaution but no bleeding or pain.
  • I had 2 (twins) done abdominally. Your uterus contracts when they out the needle in which is uncomfortable but its also pretty quick. I was also a nervous wreck because they knew something was wrong with one of the babies, it was just a matter of finding out what it was. I think the transcervical is less painful but its slightly riskier too. If they have the option, I think the abdomen is the preferred method, but it all depends on where your placenta happens to be. Don't let people scare you, even though there is a risk of MC, it is very small. Doctors won't do it unless there is a good reason.
