Severe.Back.Pain

Hey all.

Well since about April 5th or so I started having some lower back pain. I went to work the entire next week still pain worse little by little. That Friday I got a positive pregnancy test. Saturday sat in a booth when we went out for dinner and that is when the pain really got bad. The following week I went to work but left early 3/5 days and didn't go back for Thursday and Friday.

I had my first Dr apt. Because I told them about the pain. They did the t/v ultrasound. All was great they said. And recommended a chiropractor.

I have not been back to work yet BECAUSE I cant stand, or sit for more than 15 minutes. Laying down has been the only way I am comfortable. Lots of crying outburst too. Needless to say I have been in bed for about 2 weeks now.

Currently at the 8 week mark and have another Dr apt tomorrow with ultrasound.

Was wondering if anyone else has ever heard of or experienced back pain this severe to where you can't do anything other than pay down walk to the BR and maybe stand for a bit .

With my first I had intense back pain, and basically would get stuck at the store halfway through grocery shopping, because it got so bad I literally could not move a leg. I went to a chiropractor (should have gone sooner) and it helped relieve some of the pain.

I would suggest seeing a chiropractor once a week, massage every two weeks, hot/cold packs and back strengthening exercises every day. When you sit, always have your legs elevated. Don't sleep just on your back, try and change positions often. Make sure your car seat and steering weal is properly adjusted to your height (you are not sitting too low and too close to the steering weal.) The chiropractor will have suggestions for you as well.

Good Luck! I hope some of the suggestions help a bit.

  • I forgot to write. That I have gone to the chiropractor everyday for the last 2 weeks excluding the weekends. Tried to work yesterday but lasted 2 hours and left in pain, this time was going down the front of one leg to my knee and really affected my hips. It was horrible.
  • I don't actually think your pain sounds baby related...it seems more like a bulging or herniated disc with sciatica. Rest and muscle relaxers are your friend, as are pregnancy safe pain medication.

Not sure what is allowed during pregnancy for MRI or xray, but see if you can get an orthopedic referral. They will be able to tell you what's going on.

Everybody gave good advice, and resting will certainly help. Follow up with your GP and see what they have for suggestions.

I am def not a dr, but have gone through degenerative disc disease and a spinal fusion and her symptoms sounded similar to a bulging disc (which could lead to sciatica as well).

More back problems are one of my biggest pregnancy fears...yikes.

  • The chiropractor said that it wasn't a disc or anything like that but mainly muscle spasm and my pelvis and sacrum were misaligned. When I stand for long periods of time I can feel my back muscles tense up to the point where I start walking with my butt stuck out a bit. Lol. I just want to feel normal again

My OB said certain muscle relaxers and pain medication are safe during pregnancy. Spasms can be super painful.
