Hey everyone, I posted this on the Photography board, but that is dead as crap right now.
Short story is this: I sold my Canon T1i a few months ago, wanting to upgrade to a 50D or 60D. I haven't actually upgraded yet and we are going on vacation next week. I am going to rent a 60D body and two lenses. I am thinking the 35 mm f/1.4L and then either a zoom or telephoto.
Thoughts on the range/brand I should choose for the other lens? I've had the Canon 18-135 in the past and wasn't crazy about it, but the f stop isn't great on that lens.

Re: NTTGPR: Is anyone into photography here?
My fixed lens is a Canon 1.8 50 mm. It's my fave and I hardly ever use a zoom.
However, a 35 would be awesome too. But a zoom is handy on vacations for those times when you can't get closer to what you want to photograph. I would say the important thing to remember is to get the best f stop and work the zoom range around that. You could get a 300 mm zoom with crappy f stop and you would get crappy photos. Pick a good f stop and then try to find a zoom to fit your needs.
Back in my sports photography days, the bigger the zoom the better but you may not need that. What you mentioned before sounds like a good range for general photos.
I've found that the off brand lenses are just as good and even better than canon. Many times you get more for less money too.
I hope you enjoy the 60D and you end up falling in love with it!

Me too! I had the 50mm f/1.8 with my T1i and that shiit was always on my camera. I want the 35mm f/1.4L because we are going to Salem on our trip and I think that some of the places will be dark/small. I think that would give me the most flexibility in small/cramped places.
I really want a zoom/telephoto since we might go to a Red Sox game.
I like the idea of the Canon 70-200 f/4L, but it's so big.

Those suckers are heavy.
If you do go with that one, take a monopod. It's a life saver, especially if you're zooming in and those little hand shakes may be seen in your pictures. Check with the ballparks regulations, they may not even allow a monopod in the stands.

I have the Canon 70-200 f4 L IS and it is an awesome lens. ( nice and sharp at f4) It is not as heavy as the 2.8 and much cheaper too.
That was my thought. Though I would love it, I don't know that I want to spend the money to rent it with the possibility that we might go to a game. Because that's really the only thing I'd use it for.
I really don't want the Canon 18-135 again. I'm thinking about the Canon 24-105 f/4L or the Tamron 18-270 f/3.5-6.3. They are pretty much the same price. The f stop isn't as important for this one to me since I'd pretty much only be using it outside in the afternoon.
Does anyone else have thoughts?

Hi there! You are speaking my language also! I'm a wedding and portrait photographer. I shot with the canon 40D for years and just finally made the upgrade to new Canon 6D and love its full frame and wifi.
I also purchased the 24-105mm L series lens and think it is great. I do love my little 1.8 50mm though.
Enjoy your camera rental and photographing your trip!

I LOVE the 50mm f/1.8. I will totally buy it again.
How heavy is the 24-105? I'm leaning towards that one.

Honestly I'm used to some pretty heavy gear at weddings so I don't think it is too bad. I'd take it on a trip...just wouldn't want to carry it and my camera all day though.

Do you think it's light enough to not need a monopod or tripod? I'm trying to take as little equipment as possible.

Yes i think it would be fine without a tripod. Especially since you said you'd be shooting in the afternoon sun. And if your shooting it at the baseball game i'd probably pull my feet up in the seat and balance my camera on my knee. Well that or the railing if you get lucky to sit near a hand rail. I tend to get creative with what I have to work with.

You guys are creative! I've hardly ever taken pics from the stands. We were always on the baseball or football field, standing for several hours. Monopods were my best friend.
Sounds like you have a good plan and good equipment to take with you. Good luck!
