1st Trimester

First World Problems: Pregnancy Edition (hair dye)

My OB ok'd temporary wash out hair dye while in first tri and my grays are OOC. I have colored my own hair for years but let my stylist do my highlights and I just foil those off when I do the all over color. I have never used temp dye before though and it took me 3 stores to find one in my color. How hard can this be, right? I only wash my hair 2-3x/wk so this should last a while...

Since I am leaving for a work conference in 2 days, I did the color this afternoon. The mixture burned my scalp like an SOB so much that I had to rinse it out early, thus eliminating any chance of color over the gray.

....headed out to the store later to buy the color mascara wand thingy until I am out of first tri in 3 weeks.. Angry

  • I bought a box of dye just before my bfp and never got the chance to color my hair. My highlights are grown out to the point that my hair looks greasy even after I just wash it. FWP for sure!

  • I color and highlight my hair and to be honest, I have no worries or fears about it damaging the baby.  I even use permanent color to cover my gray *gasp*.  We are constantly exposed to various chemicals in our everyday environment, they are in EVERYTHING we use.  Even a half gallon of milk has a plastic based coating inside of the carton.  In this day and age we cannot escape chemicals in everything we use, so I don't fret or stress about a little chemical exposure to my scalp every 6 weeks.  God only knows what's in my make-up, that's something I put on my face everyday.  I would suggest doing whatever you feel comfortable with.  If the hair dye bugs you, don't use it.

My OB said specifically said no permanent color in first tri (I am guessing it's the ammonia, whether its the fumes or chemicals, not sure) so I am going to play it safe by listening to her recs. But god as my witness, I will be in the salon second tri to get these roots and grays fixed and paying someone to do it instead of doing it myself so I don't end up a hot mess!!  And i have never used this temp dye before. If I knew it would feel like it was eating my scalp away, I prob wouldn't have done it (ahh hindsight, what a b*tch)

But I fully agree with you about the chemical thing for the most part! I didn't change my makeup or any other things beauty items in my daily routine (besides retinol in my acne cream).

  • It is frustrating when recommendations vary so much. My paperwork says that hairdye and perms are fine.

My roots and greys are getting unpleasant, so something needs to happen soon Big Smile

  • My doctor also says there is no harm in coloring your hair and highlighting has no harmful chemicals and does not touch your scalp.  I also colored hair for years...it is not dangerous.

  • My hairdresser explained to me that the molecules in hair dye/ bleach aren't small enough to enter your bloodstream and another hairdresser told me that the reason people were originally told not to color their hair is because a lot of the hormones come out through your hair and that it may alter the color result.  Also "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book states that it's safe as well.  I got mine done at 10 weeks.
  • My hair looks horrible, too. I tell people I'm ombré, but not by choice. Some people conpliment my hair. I think it just looks grown out and yucky. I'm looking forward to second trimester highlighting!
  • Both my stylist yesterday and my SIL who is a professional hair dresser both warned me about getting my hair touched up. The hormones in our body change the way the color would react. When my SIL did her own hair while she was pregnant with her son I forgot what color she said her hair turned out to be but is was NOT what she wanted at all (it was pink or something like that).. it was all because of the hormone changes.

Both suggested waiting till at least a month after giving birth before doing color, though it would still be iffy if you were Brest feeding. And I know the pain of trying to find temp dye, I've been looking for black temp dye for months now for a Cosplay I plan on doing next year. Cheaper then a wig and more comfortable too.

  • My hair stylist said its safe to get highlights for the same reasons above but I am choosing to wait until the 2nd trimester. She did mention that because of hormones you hair might not "take" the color as well ... so that should be interesting!
