Talk to me about walkers

DS is 30 inches and just started cruising I'd like to get him a walker but being a first time mom I am really lost as to which brand to trust. I'd love if you mommies could recommend a good walker for my little guy

Re: Talk to me about walkers

  • are you talking about the push kind or the kind they ride in? lots of people discourage the latter but we had both and LO loved both.

  • I just got this push walker for my LO and he really loves it.  As soon as he starts pushing it, he just laughs and smiles.

I've also heard that the kind you put them in are discouraged now, not safe or something.  I didn't look into them myself though because I just wanted something small that wouldn't take up a lot of space and that he could push around easily.

  • The kind they sit in and walk around (looks like an exersaucer) are not recommended and our pediatrician was very adamant that we do not use one.   A push walker is great for little ones though.  DD had a stroller kind (pink) that really helped her and was very stable.

  • Walkers are banned in Canada but DD used one when we were in the US once.  She didn't really like it, and I much preferred when she used the exersaucer.  We got a TON of use out of Exersaucer, so I'd definitely recommend one over the walker.  Also she loved the jolly jumper to get her feet moving.

  • Someone gave us the sit in style walker for our shower and I think my son used it for a total of 15 minutes. The only time that we used it was when he became too mobile to not get angry if I had to step out of the room to do or grab something. Within two weeks of using it for the first time, he was cruising really well and moved right to the push walker, which he STILL loves to push even though he's been walking on his own for months. I'd definitely go with the push style walker since you'll really get some mileage out of it. We have both the VTech farm one and the Laugh and Learn puppy one-- I think the latter is a little sturdier for new walkers.

  • We had this one, which I got pretty cheap at a consignment store:  https://www.amazon.com/Combi-All-One-Activity-Walker/dp/B004GJXFYE/

He loved it and it saw some decent use for a couple months.  We have a sunken living room with two stairs leading down into it, so we just used it in there and there wasn't any danger of falling down a staircase or into a pool or anything with it.  It also converts so they can walk behind it without being suspended in the attached underpants once they get the hang of it.

  • this is the one DS had:

there was nothing dangerous about it, and for him to fall down stairs, he would've had to climb up stairs in his walker to then fall down. we were always on the first level. he cruised & walked at normal ages... it's not like he was in that walker all day every day. but when he was in it, he LOVED it. he loved moving around, he loved the buttons on the front, it was perfect for him. if you end up getting this type of walker, i highly recommend the one i linked.
