1st Trimester

How do you deal with this exhaustion?

I think I'm right at 5 weeks, and every afternoon, from around 11 til about 4, I am so exhausted I can hardly move. It's miserable. I won't drive then because I'm seriously afraid of falling asleep behind the wheel. If I sit down for more than a minute or two, it's all I can do to stay awake. How does anyone get anything done during the 1st trimester?? Or is this not normal?

Re: How do you deal with this exhaustion?

  • I take a nap.... from about 11-2 and then am fine latter although I only work part time and in the evenings... so that wont work for most people....

Yes, normal. Your 1st trimester is crucial and you really need to listen to your body. Rest when you need to and don't feel guilty. More than likely you will get your energy back by your 2nd trimester. Don't force yourself to "get up and go" if you are experiencing fatigue. Good luck and congrats =)

  • I'm in between jobs right now so I'm lucky enough to be able to nap. I'm starting a medical office job here pretty soon at one of the hospitals and hopefully some of the fatigue will subside by that time! I find myself being okay during the day but by the time 5 to 6 pm rolls around I'm almost ready for bed haha. Sometimes I'll need to nap though. But don't worry, it's completely normal to be exhausted. Your body is doing a lot of work! It takes a lot of energy to grow another human being! Supposedly by the second trimester you're supposed to start feeling normal again, but this is just stuff I've read. This is my first pregnancy so I'm not sure how true this is or not. But yes, I'm definitely feeling the exhaustion as well!

Most women do get their energy back by 2nd trimester. It may have been almost 10 years since the last time I was pregnant (before this pregnancy) but I can remember waking up at night (during my 2nd tri) with bursts of energy..wanting to walk around and clean. Wait until you hit the nesting stage! You will be zoom zoom zooming around cleaning and readying your house for baby. Your energy will be a nice change..before you go back to being tired when you hit your 3rd tri, hehe =)

  • I started feeling really tired about a week ago and that is actually what prompted me to test a couple days early. I haven't completely cut out coffee so that helps. But I am only having one cup in the morning and by mid day I am really tired. Today I did a run at lunch and that seemed to perk me up a little and now at almost five I am dragging.

Haha well in that case I can't wait for the 2nd trimester! I have been slacking on housework and everything lately and I feel guilty because of it! I just want SO to at least come home from work to a clean house and dinner but the past couple nights I just said F it and laid on the couch haha! Tired in the 1st trimester, energetic in the 2nd and tired again in the 3rd...what a roller coaster ride! But it'll all be worth it in the end :-)

  • I have felt horrible the last week, I think it's a combo of the m/s and exhaustion. I barely have the energy to pick up after my son during the day (most nights I just leave the toys lying around). I agree with PPs, nap when you can and just know your not being lazy. House work can wait, just listen to your body. The 1st Tri is rough and your body is doing a LOT.

  • I nap while my kiddo naps (when she cooperates!) and let everything else slide. I let H take care of more stuff around the house than usual. I let him get up with the kid in the morning and sleep in for an extra 15 minutes.

It's hard for sure and I am barely making it even with all the extra rest! Just know that the 2nd tri will be better.

  • Good to know. I knew that pregnant women get tired in the 1st trimester but I've been so shockingly exhausted that I got a little concerned.
  • It's normal. I could barely stay awake during the first tri.

  • I am really bad about taking naps, but I do make sure to go to bed early.  The best for me is to get around 10 hours of sleep at night.

  • I don't take naps mainly because I work full time. But  I definitely have been achieving a lot less at work lately. But I cannot help it. But, I try to go to bed earlier and when I get home I nap sometimes. Thankfully my DH helps take care of DS when he can and lets me rest. My house work has been taking a hit but taking care of myself and baby is way more important.

  • Yes it's normal. I started the fatigue around week 7 and it is still hanging around at week 10. Basically, nap when you can and when you feel alert and like you have energy...use it! Because you don't always know when the fatigue will hit and when it does hit you won't feel like/be able to do anything. And make sure you're getting at least 8 hours of sleep or more at night. I find that I need 10 hrs a night right now and naps when I can get them (I work from 9-6 pm so it doesn't always happen). I've been told you get more energy in the second tri. Good luck!

  • My tiredness is what prompted me to take a pregnancy test! After a two hour midday nap I was still exhausted! Totally normal. All I can say is nap when you can, take it easy and eat nutritious food. Oh, and stay hydrated!
