Hey - I'm new to this board but wanted to introduce myself and see if you ladies might be able to offer some advice to me.
My DS has been exclusive BF since he was about 6 months old. After that we started supplementing with formula. We use the Gerber Good Start. We also started solids around 5.5 months old. We've done things like oatmeal, peas, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, applies and pears. DS has always been a good eater and a bit of a chunk but he has also been a spitter and seemed to have had a lot of reflux. Overall he seems happy though and not uncomfortable.
A little before DS turned 7 months we started to notice that he was breaking out in hives on his arms and legs at various times. I'm trying to do what I can to figure out what is causing it. It does not seem tied to a certain food from what I can tell but I'm concerned that maybe it is related to the formula he is now getting. Of course we're also in a major pollen season around here so it could not be food related at all.
If your child was sensitive to formula what were the symptoms? Does anybody have suggestions on the best way for us to try and figure out what is going on with him to see if it's food related or formula related? We also have cats in the house and I am wondering if he is sensitive to them. At this point I don't really know the best way to go out figuring this out.
Thank you for reading if you've gotten this far. This is so nerve racking!
Re: Help! How to find allergy cause?
1. Ask your pediatrician about getting an epipen. If a more severe reaction happens, you'll want to have it on hand.
2. Ask for a referral to a pediatric allergist. They can help with testing.
3. If it were me, I'd back off on foods and see what happens. Until baby is a year old, they get all of the nutrients/calories they need via breastmilk/formula. See if things clear up. If they do, introduce a fruit or vegetable again. Go slowly like you do at first to see what's happening. This is JMO, I would definitely be fighting hard to see an allergist though. GL
