Getting signed out of work

With DS my pregnancy had zero complications and I felt fantastic the entire.  So  I worked right up until the day I delivered.

With this kid I've got the whole wonky placenta/umbilical cord thing going on, plus I just feel like crap and am totally swollen and exhausted and blah.

I'd like to ask my OB to sign me out of work no later than 36 weeks.  Is this something people normally ASK for, or it usually the OB's idea and he/she suggests it to you based on your visit?

I'm totally clueless on this.  :  I'd appreciate any suggestions/thoughts/feedback

Re: Getting signed out of work

  • I have no idea about gettin signed out. Is this to get ST disability?

I can tell you that while I did not enjoy my first pregnancy I was able to do so much more and worked until the day I delivered. This pregnancy is so much more difficult. I don't understand how my body is struggling so much more this time, given that I've already done it once before. Just know you're not alone.

  • I asked to get out of work a few weeks early bc I was so uncomfortable, I road the bus with disabled children. All the bumping around etc. I just couldn't do it anymore. My mw was fine writing me a note. Unfortunately I went into labor the night of my last day.

  • With my first I worked until 37 weeks and went out on short term disability and had him at 39 weeks. It wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor and see what she/he says.

  • I am curious about this too. I always hear about people deciding their last day of work but when I asked my employer they told me I was unable to pick I last day. I HAD to wait until I went into labor to start my leave. I never asked my doc though.
  • Every appointment with my OB she asks me if I want a note for reduced hours or to go off on EI, my diabetes dr asks me too. I think they will give you a note to get off work whenever you feel you need it, so it shouldn't be an issue to ask them.

What your employer is saying is misleading but they're saying you can't opt out of work for no real reason.  Of course, if your doctor finds a medical reason you can't work they absolutely will abide by that.  Not all doctors will write you out for less than clear cut, obvious medical issues.

Last time you were pregnant without a little one to take care of. I have to remind my husband constantly that I'm so much worse this time because I am still working AND taking care if a 3 year old.

  • I think it depends on your OB. When I was pregnant with DS I was teaching fourth grade and pretty miserable towards the end. I asked about her writing me out of work and she said she couldn't really do it without a medical reason. My water broke while I was getting ready to go to work in the morning. However, you are having a different pregnancy with a different OB so maybe you will get a different answer.

Surprise! Baby #4 is due in March!
  • I also live in CA and I asked my Dr if she normally recommended a time to take off work. She said since the state allows 4 weeks before the due date she has no problem signing a letter for that. I had a coworker whose doctor told her the same thing. I don't know if this is true for every doctor, but it's worth asking!

  • I think it just depends on the doctor. Mine will take anyone off work at 36 weeks if they want. I worked until 37 last time but like you, this pregnancy is so much harder!

  • Do you all lose time by taking off early? Even with a dr note and short term disability I would lose time on the back end with the baby.
I'm exhausted! The second time is sooooooo much harder but I just put in for my last day, three days before my due date.
  • In CA you can collect disability starting four weeks before your EDD. My MW said she'd sign me out whenever I want to start my leave within that window. She encouraged me to start three weeks prior, so 37 weeks. That's probably what I'll do because my job is stressful and I'm already pretty uncomfortable. Plus I want some down time before LO comes.

  • I see you're in CA, so I guess this really doesn't help you, but in NJ your STD can start up to 4 weeks prior to delivery and 6 weeks after (more for C section, 8 I think?).  I was due with DD on a Wednesday and I made my last day the Friday before.  I ended up being a week late so I had that week at home.

I initially said that I'd work up until my EDD with this one, but I under estimated how much this kid would kick my @ss.  I'm so sore and tired with this one, that I'm considering taking leave around 38 weeks.  I have an appt next week with my doc, so I'm going to ask him then.
