Help- Bottle to sippy cup

My daughter just turned 1 year. We are trying to transition her from bottles to sippy cups. We have been offering her water in a sippy cup for several months now. However, she usually plays with it and doesn't want it. So we are struggling with trying to transition her to drink her milk from a sippy cup now. Any tips or suggestions? TIA

Re: Help- Bottle to sippy cup

  • We tried it one day and it worked. Then they got sick and wanted nothing but their bottles.

When they felt better I tried again and they HATED the sippy cups. I was worried I was going to be using bottles forever. So I just kept trying every few days.

Then on their first birthday I gave them milk in their sippy cups. They took it and we haven't looked back. It was just like POOF! one day they were ready.

So I guess in your shoes, I would have just kept trying every few days and eventually hope it takes.

    Good luck!

  • we tried a few cups and now he is using one with a soft spout.  This seems to be working fairly well. However he still plays with it. Once I think he is getting really good with this cup I think I will try the regular sippy cup again. But I agree with other posts....sometimes they just aren't ready and if you just keep offering it they will get it on their own. :)

  • We hid the bottles, and it was out of sight out of mind.

  • One day we removed the bottle except for her nap and bedtime.  She played with them alot at first, and eventually got used to them.  She was getting enough milk in the two bottles, so there was no stress about her not drinking enough.  Now we just have to get rid of the last two bottles.

  • Have you tried cups with a straw? We tried the regular sippy cup when we transitioned and DS hated it! But then I used the playtex cups with the flip top and he loved it. The straw was so much easier for him. Good luck.
  • Thanks sooo much everyone for your suggestions and help. I appreciate it very much. I am going to continue to offer her the sippy cup and hope it clicks when she is ready. Yes, I have tried a straw sippy cup but didn't have much luck, WIll try again though.

And it's not the end of the world if it takes her a while to transition :)

Agree and thank you for saying that.

We are still transitioning. I almost think its me that thinks he still needs a bottle first thing in the morning, last thing at night and before naps. We started with a water sippy during meals. If they are thirsty, they will take it and figure it out. Then I started offering milk cups with snacks. Before naps will be the next place I go, but we will have to see :)

  • My son is 13 months old and still will not drink from a sippy cup.  We have offered him about 4 different types of sippy cups with breast milk or water and he won't drink from them.  They are ok with him still drinking from bottles at daycare, so for now we just keep giving him bottles and offering the sippy cups...
  • I agree it isn't the end of the world. I am going to still offer and see where that goes. I am in no hurry. It was just the recommendation of our Doctor
