If your LO still has a bottle, come in!

P is still using a bottle to drink his milk. It's the only way I can get him to drink it. I have tried every other sippy and cup out there and he's not interested! He's down to one bottle in the evening and I've tried to make sure he gets his calcium other ways. What is your plan of attack for weaning from the bottle? I feel like the longer I wait, the harder it will be. More importantly, I do not want to have him on a bottle when LO 2 arrives. Thoughts??

  • Honestly? Have him help you throw the bottles away even if its into a clean bag so you can pull them back out then don't give him a choice. He'll figure it out.

  • Should I worry he's not getting enough milk? And keep trying other ways to get him to drink? I think that's my biggest concern.

  • DD doesn't use a bottle but I find that she doesn't really drink water out of her sippy so I use the little plastic cups that have the attached straw on the side. Do you think P would use one of those? She also is pretty good at regular cups, but I just put a little bit at a time in those.
  • I'd probably go cold turkey as well.  That's what we did with E a couple months ago.  We use the NUK active sippy cups and at first she freaked out that her milk wasn't in her bottle, but she eventually gave in.  Good luck- it's not easy!

I think they need 17 grams of fat a day which could come from food like avocado, full fat yogurt and other foods. Vitamin D they can get from the sun and vitamins. Lots of veggies are better sources of calcium.
  • Levi just switched to a sippy a few weeks ago.

I did it cold turkey and although it took him a good day or two he decided it wasnt worth the fight

That is the only sippy cup E would take.  It's great, because the spout is really soft, almost like a bottle nipple.  Some of those sippy cups are really hard to use- I can't even get liquid out of them myself!

  • Does he like Yogurt?  Cheese?  Great sources of calcium.

B doesn't use bottles by like someone else said, she is picky about what she drinks from certain cups.  She won't drink water or juice from her sippies, only milk.

  • Alastair still takes a bottle. 3, to be exact.
There is no real rush for me to change that any time soon.

Edison does as well and if we put milk in a regular cup or sippy cup if it makes it to is mouth he will sit there with his mouth full of milk and let it slowly slip out the sides.

I'm pretty sure our son is going to dictate how we raise him...sigh.

  • This morning I gave him some chocolate milk in a sippy and he drank it up. Brat! I'm going to try almond milk as well.

  • I've been using those sports bottle type sippy cups for G. They look & work  almost like a bottle but are not really a bottle.

  • We still do 1 bottle at night. She was very resistant to the sippy cup with milk in the mornings, but after 2 weeks of her refusing and us not giving in, she takes it. We just need to do the night time transition.

  • I started with one bottle at a time, the morning one, since she's always thirstier then. I was prepared for her to drink a lot less, and she did in the beginning, but over the course of a few weeks she got the hint. She had been using straw sippys for water for months, but refused milk in them, and was also then refusing the water because she thought I was tricking her with milk instead haha.

So we use a Nuby spout sippy for milk, totally different then what her water comes in, and that worked for us. I think the key is to stand firm, realize its totally ok if he drinks less milk for a while, and eventually he will get on board.
