Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

foods for LO

so I've been reading a lot of the posts on what everyone is feeding their LO's....my LO is 14mos and has 4 little specks for teeth.

how many teeth does your LO have that you're able to feed them such advance foods?? for the past week now, I've been teaching LO how to suck and nibble on a beechnut graham craker, and he's barely getting it. If I dice up some tomatoes for him, he doesn't even chew it....he just tries to swallow it - same thing when I give him bread.

with this in mind, I'm at a lost as to what to feed LO

Re: foods for LO

  • They don't need teeth to chew food(google BLW for further explanation). DS only has 7 teeth, but he eats the same foods we eat just cut up smaller, minus things like chips and popcorn.

  • DS has 6 teeth all in the front, no molars and eats chicken, pieces of ground turkey, pasta, cheese, yogurt, waffles, cereal bars, goldfish crackers, etc without an issue. just keep offering, LO will get there.

  • My son has six front teeth and eats everything we eat. My niece didn't get her first tooth until almost 17 months and also ate everything we ate. She just chewed with her gums.

  • I agree with looking up baby led weaning for more information.
I was just thinking, maybe doing strips of food instead of bite size pieces, or vice versa if that is what you are doing. Then LO has to bite it to get the piece off. And I'm talking toast, bananas,  SOFT foods.  A little gagging is ok, because that gag reflex is much farther forward than an adults. And it will re-inforce "CHEW YOUR FOOD"
Doesn't matter how many teeth they have though. Those teeth are right under the gums and if you can smush something in your mouth, baby can chew it just fine.
Keep emphasising how to chew with LO as well. Also, Stick with what you are doing first, then work on "eating training"  Put some food in babys belly so they aren't starving, THEN work on chewing. Nobody can do anything on an empty stomach!!
Best of luck. Sounds like you are on the right track. A couple days trying somethin new and they'll have it down pat!

  • Ds has six right now, but he's been eating what we eat for a long time. I cut cheese up into thin strips he could pick up. Things like sweet potato fries and steamed cauliflower or broccoli ect to practice with were good. I made sure the pieces were small and soft enough to be swallowed, and he did just swallow at first, but soon enough he was chewing.

  • I agree with the previous posts.

DS has four teeth and he has been eating solids since around december (he was 9 months). His teeth came in more recently.

  • You chew with your molars and you bite with your front teeth. LO has zero teeth and was on 100% table food. things like apples were in slices until a top & bottom tooth showed up so she could bite. Pieces of steak are hard with out molars. Everything else really you don't need teeth.

I think children need to learn that they have to bite & chew rather than just swallow. That is why LO only had one week of pureed food before she went to chunky then a few weeks late it was all table food.

  • DS didn't cut ANY teeth until 18 months. At 20 months, he only has 4. He's been eating solids (I mean actual food, not just purees) since before he was a year old.

He eats all sorts of food - bananas and berries, grape tomatoes (halved), pasta (cut into little bits), little bites of meat, bread....pretty much anything but steak. Peanut butter sandwiches and cheese are two other things he gets quite often.

They learn to chew eventually. Just make sure that the pieces aren't choking-hazard size, and definitely don't leave him alone while he eats. It doesn't hurt to make a fool of yourself and mimic an exaggerated chewing action. Sometimes I still find myself chewing with him when he eats...hopefully I don't do that in public anymore...

If you're really nervous about it, try thicker soft foods - thick yogurt, oatmeal, applesauce. You can add baby cereal if it's too runny. Super-soft veggies are also good - steamed broccoli, mashed potatoes. Sweet potato was one of the first that DS learned to chew - you can easily adjust the consistency by adjusting the baking time.

I hope that helps - I know it's really hard when LO doesn't have as many teeth as other LOs.

  • We did BLW, so at 6 months my son was eating steak, chicken, potatoes, melon, green beans, broccoli, etc.  He got his first tooth at 10 months.  They don't need teeth to eat any solid foods.
