Constipated?

I'm only about 5 weeks but I'm already constipated! I really didn't think I would have this too badly as I really try to eat well and get a lot of fiber in my diet. Today I'm consuming like 33 grams of fiber, hoping that helps! Anyone else have any good ideas or things they've been doing? I want to put off medication if possible.

Re: Constipated?

  • I've been taking Benefiber (chewables)...they actually seem to be working right away.

  • I have IBS and it's having a field day right now. I've always been able to go to the bathroom 34 times a day because my IBS gets everything out of my system. Now I can barely go once a day and have horrible gas pains! I can't do high fiber because it only makes it worse. I don't know what to do!
  • I am convinced that sweet potatos will make you poop.  They are full of fiber.  I eat half at lunch time and some at dinner, and go everyday!
  • I quit caffeine but I know that a big cup of coffee would definitely help!!
  • My miswife with my last pregnancy suggested wheat bran. I got it at Whole Foods, and it was like this flaky stuff. I sprinkled about a teaspoon in my food every day, like in my oatmeal, and it definitely helped. Took a few days to start working, but was worth it. If I stopped taking it for a few days I would get constipated again.

  • Sweet potatoes are a good idea. They're really good for you anyway. Maybe I will stock up on those on benefiber tonight!
  • Drinking plenty of water, dried fruits, coffee, whole grains, etc.

  • psyllium husk
  • I have been horribly constipated! I ordered a Squatty Potty online... It's like a little stool for your feet when you are on the toilet. It really seems to help... Something about colon alignment. A stack of books would also do the trick!
  • Oatmeal has been my saving grace.  I'm trying to cut down on the caffeine too, but every time I do I back right up.
  • This is by far one of my most uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms :. What I have been doing is making a chicken vegetable soup. That way I'm getting a lot of natural fiber and other beneficial ingredients. I make the soup base as natural as possible with a very minimal amount of salt. In the morning what really helps me is drinking a glass of warm water! Granted I'm not having the most comfortable BM but I'm at least going a few times a day. Also be sure to increase your water intake. I'm very petite and find myself drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day. I also include pured pumpkin or sweet potatoes in non fat Greek yogurt which helps me go and gives me nutrients and probiotics which cuts down the gassy feelings! Don't forget to do some kind if exercise daily! I love yoga and Zumba so those keep my energy levels up. hope these tips help!
