help to unlatch

My 7 week old was born at 35w0days.  She had what the hospital LC called a "vicious latch" she would just attack!  We had to supplement for 3 weeks but have since been 100% BF.

I plan to see a LC soon but thought I'd ask here.  While my little one is doing well with feeding and latches well (though maybe not perfectly) I think she has no clue how to unlatch.  I have no idea how to teach this.

It's like she hasn't figured out to open her mouth first...so she has a killer suction and she is struggling to pull away and takes my boob with her.  At first it was funny...my husband fell off his chair yelling "ouch" when he saw it cause my poor boob was really getting stretched.  I have since learned to hold her head and not let her pull but she still struggles to let go and gets frustrated.  Eventually she either manages to figure it out or I just unlatch her before she gets to upset.

Any ideas?  Do I just wait until she is old enough to copy me when I say "open wide"?  She is eating well so it's not a huge deal...but I would like to save my nipples if I can!

Re: help to unlatch

  • Is she actually trying to unlatch when she's doing that?  My 34 weeker does the same thing.  She stays latched and likes to pull back and whip her head from side to side--I think she gets irritated when the milk starts to run out.  Then, she'll chill and nurse for a few more minutes before gently letting go.

I'll pay more attention because it sounds like mine is doing what yours does.  She always seem content when she is unlatched and refuses if I offer the other side.  But I'll make sure she's not upset with the milk slowing! Thanks.
