Those that EBF and use a pacifier?

To those that EBF and use a pacifier, what kind are you using and how old is LO? We have used the Gumdrop one from the hospital. It hasn't affected our BF'ing relationship but I'm wondering about switching to the MAM brand which have the orthodontic shaped nipple. This is what we used with DS but didn't switch till after 6 weeks. DD will be 4 weeks soon. Wondering if making the switch will affect anything?? We only breastfeed, and haven't offered a bottle if that changes or means anything.

  • I EBF and we use MAM pacifiers. Sometimes she loves it and sometimes she has no interest but it hasn't affected our bf'ing at all.

Great to hear! I'm not sure she'll like it, right now she will either take or leave the Gumdrop one. I just wasn't sure if the shape would affect anything. Thanks!

My LO is 2.5 weeks old and we are EBF and the only one he will take is the green soothie one is that the same as gumdrop? from the hospital. I tried the tommy tippie and a basic pacifier cant think of it right now and he hated them. Even the hospital one is hit or miss.

I do think the soothie and gumdrop are similar shaped. Thanks for your response!!

  • We're using Avent 0-3 month pacifiers and not having any BFing problems. They're great for when he's supremely and inconsolably fussy.

  • We bf and she has taken a bottle here and there with pumped milk when dad wants to feed her too, but she has used the hospital pacifier while she was there and now uses ones at home and they are the MAM brand. Nothing has affected her breastfeeding

Our DS is still a paci junkie too. We managed to get it down to naps and bedtime though!! He'll still ask for it at other times even though the answer is always the same. He must think one of these times we'll give in!!!

  • We introduced the pacifier the day we left the hospital, and only use MAMs. I'm breastfeeding and bottle feeding [using Dr. Brown bottles] and have had no nipple confusion. Introduced the bottle when he was 6 days old.

  • I am using one by Baby Life. Pretty sure it is a Shopper's Drug Mart brand though, so maybe not very helpful. I have never had any of my girls suffer from nipple confusion. DD2 was a horrible feeder, she could not get a good latch at all. Even after a month of regular (many tear filled) consults with lactation consultants. After a month i gave up and gave her a bottle. never looked back. She didn't take a pacifier until she was teething 4 molars at once around 15 months. DD1 and this LO exclusively BF and so far so good, and they both started with a pacifier at the hospital.

  • I EBF and we have given our baby a NUK pacifier a couple of times (when he's already eaten a ton and clearly isn't hungry but just wants to suckle.) He seems to like it, although he can't keep it in his mouth for too long. I haven't had any problems with nipple confusion, and we introduced the pacifier for the first time when he was just 10 days old... but I felt more confident doing so because he has been a champion breastfeeder from day 1.

  • My LO is a week old. He was really big, so they were checking his blood sugars all the time and giving him formula if they were too low. So, at the hospital he was bouncing back and forth from nipple to bottle with no problems. When Hubby gave him the paci (it's a MAM), he took to it right away. He sucks happily on it when he wants to and spits it out when he's ready to nurse (or if he drops it within a half hour of the next nursing time, I make it disappear). It hasn't affected our nursing relationship at all that I can tell. He's been totally off formula since day 3 but gets about 1 pumped bottle of breast milk every day so hubby can have the joy of feeding him sometimes too. :)
