Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Pneumonia?! (Vent/Long)

My DS got his first cold at the end of last month. He got over it pretty quickly, but a little cough kind of lingered. It was a dry cough and he has been drooling and chewing on everything so I assumed that it was more because of teething than anything else. Last week I noticed his cough had a little bit more of a "bite" to it, but he didn't have a fever and was eating fine. I called my pedi's office just to be safe and the triage nurse said to put a cold mist humidifier in his room and it should go away. It didn't go away, but it seemed to get better...until last night. His temperature spiked to 101 in a few hours and he was coughing so hard it made my chest hurt. I took him this morning and they could hear a rattle in his little lungs. They sent him for a chest x-ray, which is the most Medieval looking contraption ever, and gave him some meds. Hopefully that clears everything up, but if he doesn't sound better at the follow-up appointment tomorrow, he may have to be admitted to the hospital.

The doctor we saw said she was shocked that he had anything wrong because he was so energetic for a sick baby, which means we probably caught it early enough.

I just feel awful because I went to the doctor last weekend because I had been unable to swallow anything for about a week and my chest started to hurt. They put me on medication for a sinus infection, but said I didn't have pneumonia and wasn't really contagious. At that time I told my BF that we should take LO to the doctor just in case, but because he only had a little cough I just called instead of taking him in. I should have just listened to my intuition and maybe it wouldn't have gotten this far?  I feel so bad. And like a failure.

Has anyone else had experience with this in such a little baby? And sorry for the long rant...

Re: Pneumonia?! (Vent/Long)

  • My LO just got out of a 4-day stay at the hospital due to pneumonia, so I know how you feel. I was debating about taking him to the hospital last Sunday, but our pediatrician kind of talked me out of it, and he ended up being admitted on Wednesday anyway. I wish I had gone with my gut! But don't feel so badly - you caught it early. There are germs everywhere, you can't protect baby from being sick forever. Ours is in daycare, so he's sick a LOT, but even kids who aren't in DC will be exposed from friends, family, strangers at the grocery store...in my (relatively brief) experience, babies get sick easily but bounce back quickly. You didn't do anything wrong, and you know next time to listen to your intuition and have him checked out sooner.
