Working Moms

Pumping/supply 10-month old

DS is ten months and two weeks old. Lately he has taken up biting and I am not liking it. I have read everything on how to stop it and nothing works. He does know how to latch properly but he keeps unlatching and biting/pulling. I had to stop both his nursing sessions last night because I could not take the pain. He just thinks it is funny but he does get mad when I take it away. Then I give it back he latches is good and bites again. I think it is because he bites the bottle while eating. Since I can?t eliminate bottles, I don?t know what to do. My daughter has been sick and my mom takes care of them so having her take the bottle away whenever he bites it is not going to work there is just too much going on right now. Here is what I am thinking pump exclusively for the next month or so and then wean to WCM but here is my issue I don?t pump as much volume as I use to. I know this is normal and I am getting enough in four sessions to make two 4 or 5 ounce bottles, which is what he takes while I am at work, I don?t know if I can up my supply to be able to meet his needs by bottle. I really think my supply is fine not low so I don?t know if taking all of the supplements etc? is going to give me more milk. I poked around the breastfeeding board but most of the posters over there with supply issues have babies under a month and at that point increasing supply is easy. Anyone have this issue late in the game and were you able to increase or is this a loss cause since I don't think supply is low I am just not able to pump like I use to.  BTW I tried a rental pump and got less than I do with my purely yours. I know I can give formula but to be honest I really don?t want to wean to formula and then cow?s milk a month later. TIA

  • You could talk to your ped. about whether she would be ok with starting to add WCM in place of BM now.  (It's only 6 weeks early, and I don't think there's anything magical about waiting to 12 months on the dot for most kids.)  DD weaned at 10.5 months, a combination of dipping supply, finally STTN, biting, and me wanting my body back.  She had been supplemented off and on with formula before that, so we just moved her fully onto formula for a while, and ended up needing a long transition to WCM only because of her stomach issues.

  • The only thing that stopped DS biting was not advised - but worked - he shocked me one time and really bit me and did not release and I screamed in shock and pain.  He has not done it since.  Prior to that, I was so in your boat.

On the supply thing....I battled mine here.  DS was still taking 6 ounce bottles 3X in 8 hours at DC, and it was just not possible.  I tried EVERYTHING.  I weaned to a soy toddler formula (reviewed by my ped and very similar to infant formula) and he had that until just a couple weeks ago (he hated WCM).  So I see your concern about formula then the WCM transition, but, at the end of the day, when my pedi asked me why it was a big deal if he had a formula that met his nutritional needs for a couple months "extra" .... I had no answer.

Careful with this, I did this the first time E bit me, and he went on a four day nursing strike!

  • Biting - my experience was biting was worse when he was getting a tooth, specifically his top teeth.  It didn't last too long, and I gave him two chances.  The first time he bit me, I push him into the breast (I think I read that on kellymom), if he did it again, I ended the session.  We struggled through it, but hopefully it is related to a tooth and he will be over it soon.

Supply - my supply took a hit around the 10-11 month mark, and never really came back.  I continued to pump, but really pushed solids.  Around 11 months I called the pedi to introduce WCM early.  She was fine with it, and that took a lot of pressure off me.   We made it until  he weaned completely around 14 months.

  • Sorry for my delay in responding Friday got a little crazy at work. Your advice is very helpful and I left a message for his pedi to ask about WCM if needed. I am fine with formula too if she thinks that is best. He is getting his top teeth, I can see impressions of the top four and white on two of them, so I am sure it is that, along with supply issues due to him not nursing correctly. Also, I had the trifecta of supply killers last week stress, stomach bug and my period ugh. I bought some Fenegreek this weekend but have not taken it. Sounds like at this stage of the game all I may get from it is the maple syrup smell LOL. Over the weekend when he did bite I took him off and put him down. I noticed it is happening when he gets distracted, is close to finished, and sometimes he will nurse for like a minute and then bite. He does take in a good feed in the morning, I assume because he has gone all night without eating and I am more full so maybe the flow is better. Last night after fighting the biting all day I finally gave him a couple extra ounces I had before bed and that seemed to satisfy him. DD never bite she nursed morning and night until 18 months. It is funny how every child is different. Thanks again.
