Carrier for a heavyset guy

Hey ladies! So I have a moby which I LOVE right now (Also have a woven which I don't find as comfy and neither does DS) but he is growing fast and soon will be too heavy for the moby. We want to get a buckle carrier of some kind that both me and DH can use with him. The problem is I'm about 130 lbs, 5'4 so any carrier will work pretty good for me. DH is almost 6 ft and 250 lbs, so hes a heavy set guy. He wants the option to wear DS though and the moby is too short for him. Are there any carriers that would accommodate him? Also, what is your favorite carrier? I'm leaning towards the Ergo, but have heard it can cause hip problems in babies. Is this just for infants or babies 15 lbs an over as well?

  • ergo actually holds baby in an ergonomic way so that it doesn't hurt their hips :)

And im pretty sure they have waist extender belts to fit bigger people if the ergo doesn't fit him comfortably.

  • The Ergo performance has a longer belt that works for most bigger guys. There is an extender that works with any Ergo model. Bjorn has a bad rap for contributing to hip dysplasia because there's no leg support. The Ergo has a wide seat that supports the thighs, so its safe. I have a Chimparoo and it works for me (5'4, 125lbs) and my husband (6', 220 lbs). He tried on a lot in the shop and the main ones (Ergo, Boba, Beco) fit. He just preferred Chimparoo. If there's a babywearing group or store near you I'd get him to try them on. They're all a tiny bit different, and some are more comfortable on different frames.

  • The Ergo Sport is big enough for my big DH (he wears a XXL shirt, typically). Ergos are GOOD for hips; it's the Bjorn and similar that are problematic.
  • lurker here... DH is 6'4" and about 300lbs (I think, he won't tell me but I know his weightloss goal is 250lbs). He wears an XXL. He tried a bunch of carriers in the store, the only one that fit was the Ergo sport with the extension belt.

  • Love my Kinderpack with plus straps and perfect fit adjusters (pfa)! It's comfier to me than the Ergo.

If your hubby is set on buckles, I would really look into something like the Kinderpack which offers plus size shoulder straps in addition to a large waist.  The right size shoulder straps make a big difference.

It's going to be really tough to find a buckle that fits well on both of you - you won't be able to use a plus size strapped Kinderpack - although maybe it would cinch down enough for you.  Another option would be to go with something like a mei tai with extra long straps.

What carry are you doing with your wrap that you are finding uncomfortable?

A Tula will fit both of you comfortably. A Kinderpack with plus straps will fit him comfortably. Both are great options.

My large husband was not comfortable in the Ergo but thinks both the Tula and Kinderpack plus straps are comfortable.
