Summer shoe debate ?

Sneakers vs sandals ? Opinions ? Priced them out today and at approx $70 a pair, I'm only getting him one ! (Also bought him naturino loafers for dressier outfits)

Re: Summer shoe debate ?

  • Sandals, that's all my sons have been wearing for the last month. Their sandals cover their toe and wrap around their heel. [keens h2o]

  • I'm not a fan of boys in sandals anywhere other than the beach, so DS will be in his Jordans all summer.  DD wore sandals most of all of the time all summer, but she's very active and the more practical choice would have been sneakers.  Personally, I like to have variety in shoes.  I have always gotten shoes from payless, the nike outlet, as hand me downs, or as gift.  I just bought DD her 1st pair of Stride Rites because she's constantly wearing shoes out before she outgrows them and she's very particular in what she'll wear.  However, even after spending $60 on light up sparkly shoes, its still a fight to get them on most days and I should have spent $20 on 3 pairs at payless

  • We have both as well.

Is there some special issue that shoes cost $70.00 a pair?

I got my LO 2 pair of New Balance and Sneakers, a pair of Keens and a dressy pair of Stride Rite sandals  (for a few weddings/parties this summer) and I think they were all less than $25.00 a pair. If there's no issues, shop around. Toddler sheos are less than $70.00 a pair pretty much everywhere.

  • I was told that shoes for young toddlers need good support etc.
  • I'm sure it depends some on your weather, but I'd say sandals. DS has already been in sandals for the last month and will be all summer, but we live in GA and it's way too for sneakers. Plus DS has sweaty feet. He does have a couple pair of sneakers, and he wears those on rainy days.

Also, ditto PPs, that you can definitely find toddler shoes for way cheaper if you look around and don't care about the brand. I just can't see spending that much on shoes they'll grow out of soon. I get alot of DS's shoes at consignment shops, they're always in great condition, and that way I can afford more, so he'll have options

  • I really cannot even begin to imagine a pair of toddler shoes that could cost $70. I'd be looking elsewhere.

As far as sneakers vs sandals, we do both. Sandals typically for every day, and sneakers for stuff like walking around the zoo all day, walking through wooded areas when camping, etc. Plus a pair of dressy shoes for church, and some flip flops or water sandals for the beach.

  • Yes they need good support but exactly what shoes are you finding at $70 a pair?? Stride Rites are pricey and still aren't that expensive.  They also have sneaker style sandals that have a closed toe but breathable mesh and an open back.

Definitely not. Most of my girls's shoes are from Target and Kohls and I typically pay less than $15.

  • I got DS a pair of cheapo teva style sandals at Kohls for playing in the yard. They are so heinous I would never let him leave the house in them, but they're lightweight and I don't care if they get ruined.

I got him a pair of Pedipeds for $45 I think that are ok to me looks wise. I really only like guys to wear flip flops for sandals, but obviously that doesn't work with a toddler. DS runs hot and he sweats his booty off when he's got socks and shoes on and it's hot out (we're in the high 80s all week!) so sandals are a must for us. You can certainly find some for cheaper than $70.

Nope. The circo brand tennis shoes were our go to for the longest time. Like I bought the same pair in 3 sizes. She actually liked those more than her gifted stride rights which seemed to bother her chubby  feet. We have some name brands now but only because I happened to get a good sale on amazon...like I got 5 pair for less than a 100. Couldn't go wrong. I'm all about good sturdy shoes but they come at low price points too.

Stride Rite and many other brands have great support, and you can get them on sale at a number of places. We've never paid over $30 for Stride Rite shoes online or at the outlet. Zulily and Totsy both have sales quite often for toddler shoes with good support.

As far as style, we have both. He has sneakers, and then he has some sneaker-type sandals. Those don't have good support, so they aren't his main shoe - mostly for when we just go out in the backyard.

This.  I'll buy from Target and other stores on occasion but we typically buy from Stride Rite.  I almost always wait for sales, especially the BOGO ones.  There isn't a reason that you are spending $70 for one pair of toddler shoes.  That's crazy.

We'll do something similar this year.

  • What shoes cost $70?

I just ordered DS a pair of Keens sandals.  With tax and free shipping they cost $42.  Not cheap, but not $70 either.

I can't imagine putting DS in sneakers all summer.

  • I got DS a super cute pair of navy sandals at Stride Rite. They completely cover and protect the foot, yet are "open" enough to keep his feet cool when it gets really hot.

  • My boys wear Crocs in the summer or sneakers if they'll be doing a lot of walking.  I like Crocs because they have the strap in the back and are easy to wash

  • Last summer DD wore the Stride Rite Poppy style almost exclusively. This yr I bought her a similar pair (the Junie, I think) for when we go places, and then I got her a pair of Stride Rite Made2Play for playing outside. They're made very well but can be washed in the machine, so I won't have to worry about her ruining them. I didn't feel right spending a bunch on shoes she would ruin, but I also didn't want her to be wearing cheap, poorly made shoes all summer.

  • Where are you looking at shoes that are $70? We buy Keen sandals. They have a covered toe, great traction, and they can get wet. They also hold up really, really well. DD1s Keens from last summer practically look new and she wore them almost every day. They cost about $40 a pair, and I thought that was expensive. I would never spend $70 on toddler shoes.

  • I have a hard time spending 70 on shoes for myself, and I know I won't be outgrowing them anytime soon? To spend that much on toddler shoes?? Yikes. If they NEEDED them, I would. But I just spent 4 for two pairs of sandals at JCP. Win situation right there! Our PED never said anything about what kind she could or couldn't wear, just insists that she's in shoes if she'll be outside. We live in AZ, so tennis shoe is practically a swear word in the hot summer months. They're miserable!

All of this.  I'm curious about the brand and type of shoe so advanced in toddler foot support that it costs $70 without just being a fancy brand? I think you can go to Stride Rite and get a pair of sneakers and sandles for $70...no need to choose between the two.

  • team not paying $70 for toddler shoes.
  • The shoes are either naturino or venettini....those are approx $70 . I'll check out stride right though !
  • I like sandals in the summer, ones that also cover the toes.  It gets too hot to wear socks and sneakers all summer.  We also go outdoors a lot and they end up wet and/or muddy and I prefer sandles then too.

  • This is the first year we're putting DS in shoes this summer, so we're seeing if we need to get him sandals.  We got some heavier sneakers because we live in a rural area and wanted him to walk a little bit in the woods.  We may get him some sandals when we're out and about so his feet can breathe.  We spent $20 on his sneakers, and I'll probably try to get some cheap sandals when we go to the beach in a couple weeks.

  • I bought DS a 3 pair of sandals from Walmart last summer. He wears the sneakers year round, so I dont mind paying more money for them. But I'm not shelling out even 20 on a pair of sandals that he'll wear for 10 weeks tops.
