cold sore

So today my mom came over to keep an eye on DD so I could get some deep cleaning done. Afterwards, we went shopping with my sister. Not until then, did I realize that she had a fever blister. I freaked out and asked about it. She said she didn't kiss DD on the mouth, and only kissed her on the other side.
Well now, I feel tingling like I have one coming on and I wasn't even that close to her today. I am freaking out. I keep remembering about the baby who contracted it and died from it. I am laying in bed crying my eyes out for fear that something will happen to my baby. Obviously I'm stopping kissing her immediately, but she's already been exposed.
What should I do? Call the pedi?

Re: cold sore

  • I would say your lo is probably OK, but with the risk being what it is...I would call the ped just in case!

If I remember that story correctly, the baby was a premie and only two weeks old, which would make a big difference. But definitely call the pedi if it will help reassure you so you don't worry all weekend.

  • the story was about a young preemie, but for the first year it can make babies pretty sick if they catch it.

  • I had one when she was about a month old. She didn't get it and she was a preemie.

  • I can understand why you're so frightened. I don't know if you realize that most of us were infected with the virus as very young children being kissed by someone with a cold sore. There may never be an outbreak or might not happen until years later possibly after the baby is an adult when the immune system is low. Just in case your baby has not yet been infected, you, your family and friends who havce contact with the baby and who are prone to cold sores should take precautions to prevent a cold sore when they notice its coming on. I personally use a lip balm called Cold Sores Begone Stick which prevents my cold sores from emerging when I apply it when I feel that tingle. I buy it online.
