Ladies, it was brought to my attention by my SIL the current controversy with vaccinating your baby and the increase in autism. I know it's early in our pregnancy but it got me wondering if any of you have some thought into this topic or already know whether or not you will be vaccinating your baby...

Oh really? I personally hadn't started my own personal research on the topic my SIL just brought it up yesterday and I was curious. Thanks for the quick response

A lot of people still hang onto this idea that Autism and vaccines are related, but when you start doing the research the reality is that they have no idea what is causing the increased numbers. There are a lot of theories from the age of the mother, the age of the father, the preservatives in our food...
I usually don't touch this topic because I have gotten a LOT of crazy harassing comments from people who are anti-vaccine, but I do vaccinate my son and I will vaccinate this child (since that was the original question). Do yourself a favor and do a lot of research from multiple sources, and remember to consider the source too. A lot of blogs and such have agendas and will twist information to fit their arguments b/c they have an audience to attend to.

Its bullshyt. The doctor who spearheaded that study was found guilty of fraud and completely made up his results so he could sell his own brand of vaccine. Shady shady business. Also, its not "currently" anything. That topic has been settled a while back...

I vaccinate on schedule. I believe that not doing so (barring some true, medical reason not to and not pseudoscience you pulled off the interwebs from a crackpot) is irresponsible parenting. It puts others at risk, and that is messed up.

Vaccines are so important. My DS was diagnosed with a kidney disease called Nephrotic Syndrome in November of last year. He is currently on medication to help but due to his condition he lost all of the immunities he had built up during the first 18 months of his life. My son received dTaP vaccine and went into respiratory distress with a fever of 104. He also has autism. Vaccine harmed my child. This is rare. However I will not watch any of my children gasp for air ever again. Im not anti vaccine, but it is contraindicated for my son by his physician . This baby we will delay all vaccines also not for fear of autism but for the horrible reaction my son had from the dtap vaccine. My son was hospitalized with oxygen saturations in the 60s. It was terrifying!

OP, I know you said you will do your own research but as a PP said, be careful on which sites you are gathering information from.
Well while I am not sure about other states- but in FL and based off of my experience your child cannot attend most schools and daycare's without being vaccinated.
My main concern is my child getting sick from some of these deadly diseases they vaccinate from. There was a recent case where I am from where a child died as a result of not getting vaccinated. It is much more recent then the studies you are referring to. This story is from less than a week ago.

Yeesh, I was reticent to even respond to this because these sorts of posts can get so heated, but here's my two cents: The vast majority of vax "controversy" is simply propaganda run amok (and I say that as a former hold-out anti-vaxxer who has done so much research on vaccines using real scientific articles from credible sources - ie. not the Wakefield autism study - as a basis that I actually feel confident publicly making that assessment). It is really easy when doing research for this issue to go around and around in circles and justify not vaccinating because a bunch of people say not to, and the main reason is looking at it from a controversial perspective and only focusing on one issue, like autism, instead of viewing each vaccine as it's own entity with it's own strengths and weaknesses. This is usually because someone very well-intentioned but not very well-versed in the actual science of vaccines has brought it to your attention. It's important to actually learn what vaccines are, what they do, and to keep a realistic mindset about their efficacy (by that I mean realizing that no drug works or doesn't work 100% of the time).
The CDC does a decent job on their website of alerting you to who may or may not be a good candidate for vaccination. (To learn about that, you can also read the packet inserts that come with each vaccination on the CDC webpage.) The main concern that you should have about vaccinating your child is if you or your husband have had severe allergic reactions in the past to any of the vaccine ingredients (peanut oil and certain antibiotics being the most common), and even then you should discuss it heavily with your pediatrician and/or other health care professionals or scientists who specialize in vaccine research because sometimes the side effects of the allergic reactions are actually less risky than not vaccinating at all. Much of that will be dependent on factors like the rate of vaccination in your population and other things. Essentially a doctor can assist you in making a legitimate risk-benefit assessment for your individual situations, which most of the time will help clarify things a lot more than other people's opinions will.
If you worry about your kid's health in context of them as an individual and not the overall issue of vaccine controversy, it's much easier to create a clear picture for yourself as to what is best for your individual kid, but in general I'd try and avoid posting questions about it in general public forums since the dang autism "controversy" (which as many previous posters mentioned isn't even up for debate at all anymore since autism is likely heavily connected to genetics and the genome, as demonstrated by tons of current research findings in that field) is pretty much mucking it up for everyone who ever had any legitimate questions about the issue. If you choose not to vaccinate, please make sure you view the issue as a dynamic decision that is open to change with new research, instead of a static one based on old or unreliable data. If you're going to research it, stick to the facts and not the opinions.
Of course, that's just my opinion...
