moving while sleeping

DS is 11 weeks old. We have stopped swaddling him because he always broke out. He is now in a sleep sack. At night we watch him on the monitor and we see him constantly waving his arms and kicking his legs while he sleeps. He moves so much that when we go into his room his body somtimes has rotated a full 90 degrees or moved from one end of the crib to the other. He sleeps in 34 hour chunks right now. Thoughts? Is this safe? Should we go back to swaddling?

Re: moving while sleeping

  • My DS does this to and has for awhile.  We put him in swaddle but leave his arms out, wouldn't sleep until he got them out anyways.  As long as there is nothing in you crib besides your LO I would think you should be fine.

  • Our son is the same way though we noticed movement decreased when swaddle and sleep sack weren't in the picture. Just this weekend we were sleeping at my aunts and I put a light blanket over his lower half because the room was very chilly. Well he moved and shook forever, but once I took it off he was fine. We asked the pedi about him being an active sleeper and she said some babies are just make sure they're the only thing in the crib
  • Mine does the same thing, but swaddled.  This morning he was turned all the way around and at the other end of the crib.  Beats me how he got there.

  • DD also moves like that, but in a swaddle. I have no idea how she does it, wiggles like an inch worm I guess! It's always interesting going in and seeing where she's ended up. This morning she was about halfway down the crib, turned diagonally.

  • We don't swaddle DS because he likes to sleep with his arms over his head. But some nights he'll sleep almost all night and be 90 degrees from where we laid him down. As long as there's nothing else in the crib I don't see how it would be unsafe. I find it pretty funny, personally.
