Car shades

This may be a dumb question but I'm having a horrible time with the sun hitting my son's face now that he's in his convertible seat. I drive a sedan and the rear window isn't tinted at all so the sun is directly on him. Is there anything I can do? I'm thinking I can't put a shade on the back window legally but maybe I'm wrong. Any suggestions??

Re: Car shades

  • I put a shade on my rear window. I don't think it is illegal in my state. I used the kel gar rear window shade and it worked pretty well.

  • Why do think it's illegal. Check with your DMV, but most states, as long as the front driver and passenger windows have the legal limit tint, the rest can be as dark as it could be!

They sell these little roll up shades you can buy that get attached to the window by the suction cups, you could use those.

  • I would double check on the way the window obstruction section is worded in your state's vehicle code. And as long as you can still see through the window it would be a AH officer that cites you for trying to keep the sun off your kid. Why not get the window tinted?

edit: just saw the post above mine. The tint thing is not true in CA. Black out any of your windows and you can be cited.

No, that is not true. You can tint your back and rear windows so long as you have side mirrors on both sides of your car.

  • I'm getting a new car this summer so I don't want to put any money into it. I'll check out the obstruction laws. Thanks.

I stand corrected! My brother's SIL was cited last year for having limo tint in the back and they made her take it off!

  • It depends on the state. In PA it's 70 see through or less I believe. I asked a friend who is a cop. He said I should be fine as long as my vision isn't impaired.
