Pregnant after 35

Welcome Curtis Jon, aka CJ! (long winded Mama inside)

This is my first ever post that I have started, I'm usually more of an answerer, but I figured there might be one or two who cared to read the story of how my "little man" made his appearance!

It all started 9 months ago... I'm just kidding, surely the story will be long enough if start on Monday, which was my EDD. The update from before Monday was that my doctor had been telling me for weeks that he was a big baby, and I agreed with her. I could feel that he was bigger than my daughter had been, and definitely stronger. My daughter was not a slouch baby at 8 lbs 10 oz and 19 inches long, so I was expecting him to be at least that big if not bigger. So, 17 and a half years ago, I birthed a decent sized baby with just one shot of stadol, and I had it in my 37 year old head that I could do it again.

So, Monday, I'm there for my 40 week appointment and dr gynie starts talking again about how big the baby is. She formally begins her crusade for me to have a C-Section by insisting that I have a growth scan to estimate baby's weight and talks about the size at which we'd start to worry, adding for good measure that she is pretty sure Curtis is bigger than said size. She calls and gets me in for a growth scan that afternoon. Mind you, I had already agreed to be induced for various reasons the next morning on Tuesday. Yes, the growth scan estimated Curtis at 9 lbs 2 oz, BUT the peri-natologist (sp?) felt that this was definitely a weight that could be vaginally delivered. She reassured me there was no reason why I shouldn't be able to have a vaginal delivery. She said I might want an epidural but as far as she was concerned, that was neither here nor there.

Tuesday Morning, I get to the hospital at 5 am for my induction. They get me hooked up and chained to the bed (basically) for my pitocin drip and start it going around 7:30 or so. I walked in 70% effaced and dilated to 2, which I had been at for weeks. 10:30, dr. gynie comes in, armed with the 9 lbs 2 oz info and tries again to convince me to have a c-section. I've only progressed to 100% effaced and dilated to 3, am I sure I don't want a c-section? No thanks I'm doing ok so far.

Nurse Kelly, my favorite, says, "I can't believe she's already pressuring you to have a c-section, you're doing great and really managing the contractions well." I tell Kelly I have to pee, she says I can only have a bed pan because the baby is so high and the pitocin, I didn't really understand it but I didn't have to pee badly enough to use the bed pan so I said no thanks. Around 11:30, I told hubby to get Kelly and tell her I'd take the bed pan or whatever else she had. But, Kelly was on lunch. So, in comes relaxed but smelly nurse who's name I never caught. She had so much perfume or hair stuff on, it was turning my stomach a little. I couldn't use the bed pan, so I told her to get it off me. This was definitely the turning point for me. I was getting cranky and all I could think about was how much she smelled like too sickly flowers. She asked me to turn on my side, which hurt a lot more than being on my back. Then, she checked me. It was 11:50, she said dilated to 6. I said, BRING ME DRUGS! LOTS OF DRUGS!

She grabbed an internal monitor and went to put it on Curtis. The rest is kind of a blur but it went something like this... "No drugs, No epidural, she's crowning, we're having a baby right now!" Oxygen mask appears out of nowhere, and someone is shouting at me "Breathe Mama Baby needs you to get in some oxygen." I decide at this point that these nurses deserve to have me poop on the table since they are taking so long to get me the drugs. There's some yelling, more "Breathe!" shouting, some "PUSH" shouting", I think I hear someone say the head's out, "One more big push Mama", and then it's over. Somehow I know it's over because suddenly I feel so relaxed and relieved that it is over.

It's 11:59. Curtis is BORN! In 9 minutes. From dilated to 6 TO BIRTH. 9 minutes! Amazed secondary or tertiary nurse shouts out NINE POUNDS THIRTEEN OUNCES! WOW MAMA! 23 INCHES LONG! Good Job!!

And, then Dr. Gynie walks in to check how I am doing! She was pretty surprised to see that I didn't need a C-Section after all. She stitched me up (1 suture for the little tear he made on his way out), and the rest is history.

So, here are some pics of Curtis Jon!

We are home now, and I'm feeling pretty good all things considered. But, I will say I'm pretty sure I won't be doing that again any time soon, or ever! And, my 17 year old daughter, who watched the whole thing said she didn't want to do it any time soon either, which made me smile!! ;)
