Potty Training at 21 months?

My son has started showing interest in the potty. My question is has anyone successfully potty trained their son at 21 months?

Re: Potty Training at 21 months?

  • I have been trying to potty train my son since 18 months. I have been doing it slowly not to frustrate him but to introduce the potty not push the issue. Recently I have been taking him in the bathroom in the morning and reading books while he sits on the potty he has peed twice but not trying just as we have read. I let him put a sticker on his board that I made. I decided to use cloth pull ups as someone had suggested it to me. We tried them in the morning yesterday and he did pee on the floor I had explained to him tolet me know when he had to go so we could use the potty. However he did tell me he went on the floor. I didn't try it again I guess I'm just not sure if this is the correct way or not. I would also love some advice. I am pregnant again and would love it if my son was potty trained when our new baby arrives but I don't want to push it. I must say that we decided to try in the first place because he would tell us when he pooped or went pee in his diper.

  • My sister potty trains really young, well before 2. She brings her baby to the bathroom every time she goes and has them sit on the potty next to her. Infact baby goes to the potty whenever anyone in the house goes potty. It is a more relaxed way of training. Also if baby has a regular bowl movement, you could encorporate sitting on the potty at that time of day, for us it became a part of our nighttime routine well before we potty trained.

I did the 3 day potty training on baby center with my 32 month old. I plan on trying it with my youngest when he is 20 or 21 months.
  • My friend potty trained her boy before 2. It is possible. But I have read boys can take longer so I wouldn't push it. Just test it out.

  • DS is also 21 months and we have been working on it for a couple weeks now. We just realized that our daycare provider is not potty training when he's there 5 days a week/8 hours a day, so another conversation with her is in order. DS will go every 2 hours if we put him on the potty. He is starting to show signs of having to go to the bathroom (will play with the front of his pants). He will go in his diaper if we don't catch his signs. We're still working on it. Each time he goes on the potty is one less diaper I have to change!
