They kind of rapidly suckle without swallowing a lot of milk. When they are actually nursing they do that pause, audible swallow, pause, audible swallow. Using you as a pacifier, they aren't really sucking very hard and not swallowing in a good pattern. Mine always fall asleep too.
They kind of flutter tongue without really sucking hard enough to extract milk. DD3 does this a lot, but she'll sometimes get a letdown that way and be forced to start drinking. I usually just leave her until she unlatches on her own. She's been slow to gain weight, so I need to get as much milk into her as possible.
