I won a bottle of wine at a shower today and really want to try it tonight when we have friends over tonight. Is there a way to safely have a glass since I BF?
I think one glass is supposed to take about an hour to leave your system, so if you BF right before having a glass it is probably fine. That being said, I'm a nervous mommy and when I've had a drink on occasion I have given DD a bottle of EBM and then "pumped and dumped," so you could do that if it makes you feel better. No need to pump other than to keep your supply up though, as the breast milk doesn't retain any alcohol once enough time has passed.
Nurse or pump right before partaking and wait a few hours (at least 2) after your last drink before nursing or pumping again. The alcohol level in breastmilk rises and falls the same way it does in your blood, so no dumping needed. I cringe thinking about pumping and dumping.
Since my little guy started sleeping for 7 to 8 hour stretches I've taken to having the occasional wine cooler or beer once he's down for the night. That way I know by the time he wakes up it will be out of my system. Just 1 and I do it right after I put him down. If necessary I have a freezer stash I could always thaw if he woke up early and I was worried about my supply.
It's totally fine. Think of it this way- say a glass of wine is 12.5% alcohol (which it is- the bottle and a glass are sitting right next to me! Ha!) so you drink the wine, which is about 12% alcohol. Even if you get a little tipsy, your blood alcohol level is probably something like .08%, probably less. So, you are drinking something that is 12% alcohol, but your nursing baby is drinking something which has less than 1% alcohol, which is an incredibly small amount of alcohol out of the few ounces that he or she drinks. It's not like baby is drinking wine. Heck, orange juice has that much alcohol in it, and drinking OJ doesn't get you buzzed, does it?
Yes that is fine. I waited 3 hours per glass of wine to be on the safe side. I had a glass or two almost every night but made sure not to breastfeed for 6 to 8 hours. I formula fed my baby at night so it worked out. I just pumped and dumped just to relieve pressure.
Re: Wine and BF
Yes. I enjoy some Sake form time to time.
