Allergy sufferers - what are you taking?

My allergies have never been so bad.  I am a sneezing, coughing, red-eyed mess and so miserable.  I know I can take Benadryl but since I have been taking that to sleep at night, I don't really want to take it during the day and be a drowsy mess.  I am seeing my Dr. on Monday so I will ask her then but would love any suggestions that are helping you to help me survive the weekend.  Thanks so much!

Re: Allergy sufferers - what are you taking?

  • My MW suggested a netti pot and said Claritin is also ok.
  • Loading the player...
  • I take Zyrtec daily and my dr ok'd it. She also said Claritin was ok.
  • Using plain OTC basic Claritin.  My OB said avoid the Claritin D.

I had too many headcolds this winter to mess around with allergies this late in the game.  I'm soooo thankful to have started taking it last week!

  • Both Claritin and Zyrtec were OK according to my OBs office, but unfortunately, I can't take either.  I've actually been taking Allegra this whole pregnancy, but it is a class C drug unfortunately.  If my allergies aren't controlled, I end up with bad ashtma (and was hospitalized with that for almost a week with my first pregnancy) so they have allowed the Allegra since second trimester for me.

Hopefully one of the first two options work for you....but I second that you can't take the "D" type... Claritin D or Allegra D.

  • My Dr told me it was okay to take Zyrtec.  I buy the generic kind at Sam's- it is much cheaper!

  • If you haven't tried a netti pot it's worth a try. Done wonders for me. It takes a bit to get used to but once you do it helps.

  • I have been taking Benadryl my allergies have been really bad and causing a sore itchy throat for the last few days.  My sleep has been non existent the last few days even with the Benadryl.  I really hope that this little girl makes her appearance soon I don't know how much more I can take!!!
  • I'm taking Zyrtec everyday, and my OB gave me the OK to do so. It works very well for me!

  • Claritin 24 hr every day and benedryl(one capsule) only if I feel like Im about to die.
  • I need to start taking my Claritin again. I've had the wonderful "chain reaction" where allergies are affecting my sinuses, which in turn is putting pressure on nerves in my jaw/teeth causing them to have painful spasms that come and go for hours.

Lesson for others: If you have allergies, take your allergy medicine!

  • I am taking Claritin and it seems to be helping so far. This is the first warm weekend we've had in a long while and I am doing alright. Good luck to you!
