Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Teeth Question

So my twins are 16, almost 17, months old.  H has 12 teeth and is working on number 13 & 14.  E has 4 teeth and seems to be working on one maybe two i'm not sure.  The pedi told us at the 15 month appointment that she was pretty behind on her teeth but that he wasn't really concerned.  I never mentioned this to the pedi but DH had I think 5 or 6 teeth that never came in so when his adult teeth came in he had implants put in where his teeth never came in.  Since E is so far behind with her teeth compared to her sister and given DH's history with his teeth, I am a little worried about it.  I am curious to know if anyone else's lo is on the same track with teeth as my lo or if anyone else had a big delay in when your lo got their teeth.  Thanks!

Re: Teeth Question

  • My DS is 18 months and has 6 teeth.  He hasn't gotten any new teeth since October, but is just starting to cut a few more.  My pedi hasn't expressed any concern.

  • DS is almost 16 months old and has his 2 bottom teeth but cutting 3 teeth on the top. Just saw the Ped for his 15 month appt recently and she didn't seem concerned. Every child is different and some cut them fast than others, I think DS will be cutting them like crazy now.

  • DS cut his first tooth at 18 months, then 3 more at 19. He's almost 20 months now and there MIGHT be one more coming in. He's a bit extreme, but DH and I were both late teethers. I expected him to be late.

But given that your H had some issues, you might want to mention it.

  •  DD is 15mo and her top front teeth just came in a couple of weeks ago. She now has 4 teeth.  Our ped is not concerned at all.

  • EDIT: Sorry, I guess I didn't read it right the first time... My LOs little cousin has been slower getting teeth also. I don't think her pedi has ever been concerned. But you may want to mention your other child's teeth at the next appointment and see if the pedi thinks your LO might have the same issues. Sorry I can't be more help.

My DH has the same problem as yours by the sound of things.. at age 25 he still has some baby/juvenile teeth and there are no adult teeth behind them.. the ones that are left are a mess and we're working on getting that fixed.  I on the other hand had over crowding and too many teeth (considering I have a big mouth, I find that ironic lol Wink ) we're hoping our lil guy gets a balance between us both and gets just the right amount.  So far he has 4 top, 4 bottom and a top right and a bottom left and the other back ones are making aserious effort to come in.  They have stopped and started for months and some we were sure were coming are still no shows.

I wouldn't worry too much right now, and to be honest if your LO has your DH's issue... there is nothing you can do about it till later on down the road anyway.  All you can do is wait and see and look after the ones that come in as best you can, because they may be the only ones you get and they could be there a good while longer than usual.
