Convertible Car Seat for Traveling

Thank you to everyone that responded to my post a few months ago and recommended the Chicco Next Fit. I pre-ordered it from Allbee baby for 237.99 and it came today. I cannot wait to get it installed tomorrow.

We're taking baby on vacation in a few weeks and bought him his own seat on the plane. I had planned on bringing the Next Fit. I did not consider the size and weight of this car seat. It's big, and heavy. I cannot see us having to drag this through the airport and trying to get it on the plane. The night before we fly out we're staying overnight by the airport and doing a "sleep & fly" so the hotel shuttle will be dropping us off at the airport. We'll have to install the car seat just for that short ride to the airport, and then obviously we need the car seat for the plane ride and then not at all until we fly home and then the quick shuttle back to the hotel again.

For the little amount we will need the car seat, what would you do... take the NextFit, use the infant bucket seat & base, or buy something else? I don't want to put a lot of money into it but we need a second car seat anyway for our other vehicle (planned on eventually getting another NextFit, it's just not a need right now as I'm a SAHM) My only issue with taking his infant seat & base is that we will only need the base for the hotel shuttle. I can stick it in the gate check bag with the stroller but I'm afraid of it getting damaged.

Re: Convertible Car Seat for Traveling

  • Can you install your infant seat without the base? I would just bring the infant seat, leave the base at home. My infant seat can be installed with just a seat belt.

Or get a cheap, small and lightweight convertble car seat like the cosco scerena. If you travel a lot, it will come in handy.

  • What infant car seat do you have  You can probably just install the infant seat without the base.

  • You should be able to install the infant seat without the base, so I would do that. Are you sure the shuttle has seatbelts and the ability to install a carseat?

  • I'd take the infant seat without the base (it won't install on the plane with the base anyway). Most airport shuttles don't have seat belts, you likely won't be able to install the seat on there.
  • I have a very heavy diono radian. We wanted a spare convertible anyway, so I bought an evenflo tribute for travel. I chose it over the cosco scenera because I think it is easier to install RF without a pool noodle. But I agree with others if your lo still fits the infant seat, you can use that without the base.
