Midwife or OBGYN ?

I am just wondering if anyone else has given thought to using or has used a midwife. I definitely want to have my baby in the hospital, but am not sure if I want to use an OB or a midwife. The care during and after pregnancy with a midwife seems awesome.... I am just concerned if anything were to go wrong, they would not be as knowledgable as an OB.

Midwives are very knowledgeable but the plus side about having a hospital birth IMO, is that if anything is over her head there are other staff members on hand to help. From my understanding some MW work with OBs as well. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.

I'm planning to stay with a midwife through my entire pregnancy as long as I'm low risk. First appt. is May 30! Woo hoo! If for some reason I become high risk for any reason could be twins as everyone is jinxing me then they will send me to the doc. I will also deliver in a hospital and they said they won't ever hesitate to get a doc involved when needed. Midwifes are also highly trained as specialists in pregnancy and birth so I'm sure they would be great. I'm going to try it out anyway! Good luck.

For my last pregnancy, I went to a practice that had both. The only thing the midwives couldn't do was a c section. The OB who was on call ended up doing the delivery and the midwife did the circumcision even.

I'm high risk and may go into preterm labor or have a breech presentation. I am using a Midwife. I actually switched from an OB to my Midwife knowing that I am high risk and my Midwife is comfortable with working with me. I want a natural birth with as few interventions as possible as long as its safe for baby. I know an OB would push an epi or csection on me and I want to avoid both if possible.

I had a midwife for my first pregnancy. It was an absolute disaster. I would never do that to myself again. I love my o.b. And since I'm high risk, there's a perinatologist in the practice too!

You're tarring all OBs with the same brush, here. I know plenty in the US who wouldn't. I don't know about how mine here in India will be (we'll find out when I talk with her next week). 

I should have said MY OB would push an epi or csection on me. She tried to get me to have a d/c early in this pregnancy because she said we miscarried qhen we actually didnt, so I was generally uncomfortable with her.

If there is anything out of the midwifes scope she will get an OB involved in your care. That is the whole way through your pregnancy to delivery.

My midwives practice has two obs on staff as well. They deliver in a birth center attached to one of the best women's hospitals in the nation. I'm not concerned about my care and I'm looking forward to the personal touch that I didn't have with my obs in my last two pregnancies.

I choose a midwife whom my SIL and others have recommended to me. While I was on the phone the other day making my appointment the nurse was bragging about how awesome he is.

The OB I wanted was completely booked and was not accepting any new clients due to the volume of deliveries she would be making in November (when i'm due).

I'm excited as it is my first time using a midwife and I'm open for new experiences.

I worked with MWs who delivered in a hospital. No OB involved. I'd only work with an OB if I needed surgery, as OB is a surgical specialty.

This may be a stupid question but do Midwives do ultrasounds and all other prenatal testing such as amios?

I was set up with a MW w/o knowing it until I googled her. I was a little unsure about it since they can have a reputation for being hippy-ish, but we gave her a chance and we LOVE her. She refuses to do home births (which was not for us anyway) and is incredibly competent. I have heard that MWs are much more personable and spend more time with you during delivery and otherwise, but of course I'm sure both MWs and OBs are all different.
